Observations:

This was my first extended look at Dalton Guthrie playing shortstop, and he looks more than capable of handling the job. In the first inning, Daniel Reyes hit a groundball into the hole at shortstop with runners on first and second. Guthrie backhanded the ball and threw across his body to first base with plenty of arm strength behind it. He had a similar play later in the scrimmage on a ball that he was forced to backhand while coming forward and threw across the diamond with ease.

Guthrie didn’t get to show off the arm very often at second base last year, but it looks strong enough to handle a move to shortstop this season, which would be my guess at this point of the fall.

Freshman Jonathan India also saw time at shortstop later in the scrimmage and showed really good footwork around the base while turning a double play. India also went 3-5 on Thursday with three singles and scored two runs. I’d be pretty surprised if he wasn’t starting somewhere in the infield on opening night.

Everyone knows about JJ Schwarz’s power, but it never gets less impressive. He looked like he didn’t hit the ball well against Puk on his RBI double in the first inning, but the ball just kept going and almost found a way out of the stadium.

Freshman Brady Singer looks to be everything advertised. The Toronto Blue Jays’ second-round pick last year had a perfect first inning of work, giving up three weakly hit ground balls. None of them were hit close to the barrel of the bat, and fellow freshman Jonathan India almost fell over trying to reach a slider that he tapped to second base.

Jackson Kowar is ready to pitch in the SEC right now. It’s three pitches for strikes, and his changeup is extremely advanced for a freshman. It’s truly a swing-and-miss pitch that looks on par with the changeup Logan Shore featured during his freshman year.

Christian Hicks added 15 pounds since the end of last season. His glove was always good when he filled in at third base early last season, and the coaches are happy with how far his bat has come in the offseason, even adding some pop from the left side of the plate. Hicks is squarely in the mix for the third base job this season.

Nelson Maldanado’s home run was not cheap. Faedo was throwing up to 95 mph, and the freshman infielder stayed on a fastball away, lining it over the right field fence. The Florida coaches thought they got a steal in the recruiting process with Maldanado, who Perfect Game ranked as the No. 500 player in the country last year. He certainly didn’t disappoint on Thursday.

As well as Maldanado hit his ball, Taylor Lane did the same thing. The sophomore infielder powered a line drive over the right field fence in the late innings of the scrimmage, showing power that he never did last season. Lane has an intriguing skillset. He’s a really good athlete that has shown good speed on the bases. If the bat comes along, he could find himself in the thick of the race for a job in the infield.

Freshman outfielder Daniel Reyes has serious pop in batting practice, and he hit a few balls hard during the scrimmage. He was late on the fastball from Troy Bacon and fell behind 0-2 because of it. Bacon came back with a breaking ball over the heart of the plate, and Reyes lined it back up the middle for an RBI single.

Freshman Eddy Demurias had a solid day with two hits. He showed good instincts on one single, advancing to second on the throw home. When he realized no one was covering third base, he kept running and got there easily.
