Florida Gators drop in CFP rankings

Florida’s lackluster performance on Saturday cost them in the rankings.

The Gators needed overtime to finish a 20-14 win over Florida Atlantic, and the College Football Playoff committee penalized them for it. Florida dropped the No. 12 in the rankings on Tuesday.

This Saturday, the Gators host No. 13 Florida State in the regular season finale. A win would close out the regular season with a perfect record at home. Regardless of the outcome, Florida will head to Atlanta to face No. 2 Alabama in the SEC Championship game next weekend. The other SEC teams in the rankings were No. 18 Ole Miss and No. 21 Mississippi State.

Florida’s 20-14 win over FAU was ugly. The teams were scoreless heading into halftime, and the Gators jumped out to a 14-0 lead after Kelvin Taylor punched a run in from the one-yard line. A few drives later, quarterback Treon Harris threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Callaway to push the lead to 14-0.

The Owls stormed back, driving down the field and scoring on a nine-play, 75-yard drive to cut the lead in half. Midway through the fourth quarter, Harris was sacked and fumbled the ball into the end zone where FAU recovered it to tie the score at 14. It stayed like that until overtime when Florida scored on its opening possession on a 13-yard pass to Jake McGee, but the extra point was missed by Austin Hardin. The Gators forced a stop on the following possession to secure the game, but they were still hurt in the rankings.

Even with their struggles with the eye test in recent weeks, the Gators would still have a strong argument to be in the playoff if they can pull off wins over Florida State and Alabama in the next two weeks.
