Gators' Randy Shannon having an impact on Dontavious Jackson

Randy Shannon has been putting in work on the recruiting trail and the Gators linebacker coach is trying to reel in a huge one from the state of Texas. Houston 4-star native Dontavious Jackson has been talking with Shannon and has the Gators on his short list.

Jackson says that Shannon and the gators have also offered his teammate, 4-star safety Chris Brown and the two will be visiting Florida the weekend of January 14.

“Coach Shannon is my main recruiter,” Jackson said. “He’s been doing his thing. He offered my teammate Chris Brown and that is intriguing.”

Things really heated up last month with Jackson and the Gators who seems pretty wide open at this point.

“It was when they really started coming hard at me in November,” he said about Florida. “Then they offered one of my teammates.”

Shannon and the defense are the two things that stand out the most for Jackson.

“It’s the defense, they do a lot of blitzing and disguising and a lot of different schemes,” he said. “I like that.

“Coach Shannon has been doing his thing recruiting me. Our conversations are lasting. He puts guys in the league and they have fun playing with him.”

He knows about Florida’s depth chart at linebacker or more likely their lack of depth. That is big, but he understands he is going to have to play well regardless of where he goes if he wants to get on the field.

“It’s a big impact, but they will always have those guys,” he said. “I just feel I can come in early and play anyway, because of my intelligence and ability.”

The staff sees that in him as well.

“They like my athleticism and my size,” he said. “I am 6-foot-2 and 245. It is just different.”

He is ready to see Florida on his mid-January visit.

“I just want to see the environment,” he said. “I’ve never been to Gainesville so it will be pretty exciting.”
