No. 5 2017 prospect Devon Hunter likes Florida

Schools from across the country continue to pursue Devon Hunter. The Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River athlete spoke with Scout about the latest developments in his recruitment.

Devon Hunter is not ready to name any top schools, but there is a group that has gotten his attention.

“I’d say Maryland, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Clemson, Florida and Ohio State are standing out,” said the 6-foot-2, 206-pound Hunter.  “Those are schools I could really see myself being successful at right now.”

Hunter, the nation’s 3rd-ranked athlete in the 2017 class, visited Maryland this past weekend.

“The trip exceeded my expectations,” he said. “The coaches really impressed me and were really serious about me being there. They were really honest with me and told me they just wanted to continue to build a relationship with me. They also told me if I came in worked hard I could compete for a starting spot as a true freshman."

While on campus, he spent the most time with wide receivers coach Chris Beatty.

“We had a relationship when he was at Wisconsin and he’s always stayed in contact with me,” Hunter said. “He was just real honest with me.  He told me I could help change the whole program around and make history at Maryland.”

The Indian River standout also had a chance to speak with new head coach D.J. Durkin.

“He basically told me the same thing coach Beatty did,” Hunter said. “He told me I was an important recruit for them. He also told me I had a lot of potential and he really wanted me to come to Maryland. I could see myself going back to visit very soon”

Hunter's next visit will be to Clemson

“I’ve never been down there, so I’m very excited because that was always one of my favorite schools growing up,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing everything – from the football side to the academic side.

“(Defensive coordinator) coach (Brent) Venables has been recruiting me for a long time and I’m looking forward to talking to him. He’s always really excited and I like his enthusiasm. I’m also excited to meet the rest of the coaching staff and hopefully just sit down and get to know them better.”

Hunter hopes to narrow his list down to ten this summer.  According to him, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Maryland, Ohio State, Virginia Tech will definitely make that cut.
