Recruiting Impact of Florida's Torrian Gray Hire

Florida football announced Torrian Gray as the new defensive backs coach on Thursday night, but how will this addition affect recruiting? Who is Torrian Gray? FightinGators.com breaks it down with help from Scout's recruiting analyst Michael Clark.

Florida football's hire of Torrian Gray is a home run.

"He is obviously one of the best defensive back coaches in the country," said Scout's Recruiting Analyst Michael Clark. "He was a great player in Virginia Tech. It  is a huge pick up for Florida. He is a good coach and really good recruiter, kind of the total package. Everything you are looking for and everything you need in the SEC as an assistant, that is who Torrian Gray is."

The Gators made the official announcement on Thursday night. Gray has 17 seasons of experience coaching defensive backs, sending plenty of players to the NFL.

"He has probably put more defensive backs in the pros than any other defensive backs coach in the country if you look at his track record," said Clark.

During his time as a Hokies assistant, nine defensive backs have been drafted and will add a likely tenth this year, when Kendall Fuller enters the draft. But his track record as a coach is only half the story.

When a program is in search of a new coach, the dream is to pick up a great recruiter and a great coach. Gray is a Virginia Tech alum, however, he just happens to be a Lakeland, Florida native. He played his high school career at Kathleen High School before heading up to Blacksburg, Virginia. Not only is Florida gaining a guy that can recruit the Mid-Atlantic- he recruited the Northern Virginia area-but a coach that has plenty of connections in the Sunshine State.

"I think its a very, vey, very good hire. You can't emphasize how great of a hire this is. He is just a fantastic coach, so you really are getting the total package," added Clark. You are getting the guy that can coach and the guy that can recruit.

"He is going to relate to other players to other recruits. I expect him to make a very good transition down there. He has that outgoing personality and kids kind of gravitate towards him. He can walk into any living room in America and talk to parents, talk to kids and he can go down the list for literally five to ten minutes about all the guys he put into the NFL. This is on par about any assistant hire you can make.

"I believe the impact he is going to make is huge on the field and off the field. It's hard to get a great recruiter and a great coach, and you are getting that with his coach. You are getting a guy that is equally great at both. He is a good teacher as well. He really teaches the fundamentals and teaches the defensive backs. He does a great job of making sure his guys getting better everyday and every year. Florida fans should be really excited about this hire."
