Spring Day 2: New Gators’ receivers impress

While sophomore Antonio Callaway is sitting out of spring practice, the Gators’ wide receivers are keeping things simple and working on the fundamentals.

Out of the whole group, junior college transfer Dre Massey looked the most impressive on Friday. His blend of speed and agility will help him earn a role in the offense this coming fall.

The other two freshmen – Freddie Swain and Josh Hammond – looked sharp on basic routes while returning members, specifically senior Ahmad Fulwood, appeared a bit sluggish. Fulwood’s best trait continues to be his size. His hands are good, but he showed a lack of agility on Friday.

Senior Chris Thompson and redshirt-junior Alvin Bailey both had good days, but did not impress as much as their freshmen teammates.

Wide receivers coach Kerry Dixon II constantly told his group to “see the ball all the way in” and “keep [their] eyes up”.

Dixon was pleased with junior C.J. Worton’s fundamentals. Worton seems to be developing a connection with QB Luke Del Rio.

All in all, the wide receivers definitely need to improve if they want to shine in the fall. I expect Massey, Swain, and Hammond to keep getting better and lock up primary roles in the Gators two-deep.
