Gators' Spring Practice Observations; March 30

It was back to the Indoor Practice Facility on Wednesday and during the early period when Fightin’ Gators was able to watch, the offense really struggled.

Freshman Kyle Trask and senior Austin Appleby were the quarterbacks in the ‘fastball period’. Both struggled mightily. Of about 14 plays there may have been two complete passes. With that said the defense looked great breaking up pass after pass during this portion of practice.

One thing I feel I should comment on is that it seems I see Nick Washington breaking up at least one pass every practice. Just a general observation but it seems he is playing very well at safety. He had a couple in the early sessions and so did Jalen Tabor with Austin Appleby at the helm. Marcel Harris broke up a pass by Trask in the opening period.

When they split up running half of the pass-skel drill things were a little better but it took a series to get that way. Appleby hit a 20-yard corner route to junior receiver CJ Worton but the pass seemed a little late. He hit redshirt sophomore Ryan Sousa on a deeper corner pass. He also hit a 16-yard out to Swain.

Trask went short on a couple of dump down passes, before a beautiful corner pass 25 yards down field to a walk-on.

Luke Del  Rio came in and hit a couple of smooth short routes, then rips off a deep corner route to  freshman Josh Hammond with freshman defensive back Chauncey Gardner and junior linebacker matt Rolin in coverage deep. Freshman corner McArthur Burnett jumped a corner pass intended for Bailey from Del Rio and broke up the pass.

From Jacquie Franciulli…

Not a good day for the offense today.

Austin Appleby took rep with the ones and I didn’t feel like he took ownership during his time in fastball. Dre Massey also dropped a pass (badly thrown) and Jalen Tabor nearly picked up a pass intended for Worton.

McArthur Burnett dropped a pick from Del Rio- should have held on to it.

Routes on air were a bit sloppy.. Wide receivers dropped some balls. Del Rio also has some balls he had to check down or over threw them. Like I said tough day for the offense

Tight ends looked really good going up against the defensive ends today. Blocking is certainly a strength. Defensive line coach Chris Rumph gave Justus Reed an earful a few times during the drill.

The running backs were in 'Wildcat' today.
