Gators fall to Auburn in SEC semifinals

The No. 1 Florida Gators lost to the Auburn Tigers 2-1 in the SEC tournament semifinals on Friday night.

Kelly Barnhill started on the mound for the Gators, and gave up a two-run home run in the first inning. Delanie Gourley replaced Barnhill in the third inning.

Gourley went on to allow one hit and no runs.

Florida tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could only manage to score one run.

“Offensively, we just need to be aggressive,” head coach Tim Walton said. “We swung the bat passively and didn’t spray the ball around the field. We have to hit the ball to right field as much as we do to left. We have to be able to hit the ball and be as productive as we can. I didn’t think we had very many productive outs, as we didn’t swing the bat with authority.”

The loss was Barnhill’s first on the year.

Florida will now wait to see where it is seeded in the NCAA tournament. The field will be announced Sunday night at 10 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
