The No. 1-seed Florida Gators softball team was swept by the No. 16-seed Georgia Bulldogs on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Super Regionals.
It happened dramatically, too.
With two outs, Kaylee Puailao hit a two-run walk-off home run in the seventh inning to send the Bulldogs past the Gators by a score of 3-2.
“First of all, congratulations to Georgia,” Gators head coach Tim Walton said. “What a great series they came in and played, a good game they played had and executed a good plan.”
After the Gators lost on Thursday evening 3-0, it seemed as though the defending national champs would come out Friday with a chip on their shoulder – at least offensively. But, they didn’t put runs on the board until the fifth inning.
The Gators held a 2-1 lead going into the final inning, and with Aleshia Ocasio pitching well, it felt as if the Gators would hold on to force a third game.
The Bulldogs determined otherwise with one big shot.
Florida ends the year with a record of 56-7 and will have to watch someone else win the National Championship for the first time in three years.
