Florida clinched the Regional Sunday night after an hour and a half lightning delay to the tune of a 10-1 whipping of the ACC’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The top seed in the entire NCAA Tournament had its share of players that helped out in the three game sweep of the weekend.
Florida pitchers Dane Dunning (Junior) and Alex Faedo (Sophomore)both were names All-Tournament for the expertise on the mound. In games one and two, Dunning combined to throw 4.2 innings allowing just 2 hits and no runs. He was key on Saturday in coming in and shutting down a UConn team that was hell bent on upsetting the Gators. Faedo through a gem of an eighth inning performance on Sunday as the Gators clinched against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Faedo started and finished through the eight inning allowing four hits and no runs while striking out 10 batters along the way. It was the most dominant pitching performance of the weekend Regional.
First base Pete Alonso (Junior), shortstop Dolton Guthrie (Sophomore), and third baseman Jonathan India (Freshman) also won the vote for their respective positions. Along with performing like a vacuum in the field, Guthrie hit 4-for-15 with 2 RBI and scored twice while batting first or second in the order. Alonso in his first action in about a month after breaking is hand, went 8-for-14 with 8 RBI and scored 6 times on the weekend. India hit 6-for-10 with 2 RBI and scored 3 times.
Not to be outdone by their infield brethren, freshmen Danny Reyes and Nelson Maldonado also netted All-Regional Team slots as outfielders. Alonso was by far the Most Outstanding Player of the Regional. An outstanding story after missing all the time with the injury to his hand, Alonso started the weekend where he left off before the injury. Before being hit in the hand by a fastball from a Vanderbilt hurler, Alonso was leading the gators in batting average, homeruns, and RBI. With the numbers he put up over the weekend, it also included three homeruns.
Georgia Tech, who was the last team standing in the Gators path to a Super Regional, placed the other four players on the Gainesville All-Regional Team. Catcher Joey Bart, second baseman Wade Bailey, outfielder Matt Gonzalez, and designated hitter Tristan English each earned All-Reginal honors.
