Texas Tech pitcher Davis Martin

Breaking down the Texas Tech Red Raiders

We here at Fightin’ Gators are fortunate enough to work with some very good people in the sports reporting business. It so happens that one of our former interns is now a reporter in Lubbock, Texas and reports a lot of times specifically on the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. Kailey Mizelle gives us her experienced take on what the Gators will deal with Tuesday night.

Florida Gators (52-15) vs Texas Tech Red Raiders (56-19)

June 21, 2016; 5 p.m.

Omaha, Nebraska; TD Ameritrade Park

Fightin’ Gators: What is the low down on freshman starter Davis Martin (9-1)? Also, the low down on the better relievers?

Mizelle: “Davis has been the starter for the most of the year. He is one of the top freshman pitchers in the country and has only one loss on his record, something that happened only in the postseason. His outings typically last 6 innings, he has gone seven, but rarely if ever goes more than that. He has a fastball, change and slider.”

“Robert Dugger has been a key closer for the Red Raiders, but they also might go to Ryan Mosely. Mosely will likely be the first guy that comes in after Martin. He started the year as a starter, but switched back to closing and has seen the most success there. He can go for long innings if needed if Martin needs to be pulled early.”

“Dugger is a true closer and only goes 1-3 innings. He comes in and gets strikeouts and has gotten the Red Raiders out of some pretty intense jams.”

Fightin’ Gators: Your thoughts on what Texas Tech has to do to win?

Mizelle: “Tech has struggled some this postseason, but typically they come back with a fight. They play great defense led by catcher Tyler Floyd. To win Tech will have to get going early. They need their bats to get going early which gives their pitchers and defense confidence to play loose. At times they can press, and do more so when behind. They can stay in a game for the most part so even if the game is close you can't count them out. If Tech can shut down Florida bats early and get a few runs on the board they have a good chance in this game.”

Fightin’ Gators: Who are the top three or four Red Raiders to watch?

Mizelle: “Davis Martin on the mound has been lights out. He is going to be huge in this game. Tyler Floyd behind the plate makes it really hard to steal a base and can get his bat going as well. Eric Gutierrez is a leader on the team and comes up with some big time hits in places that help the Red Raiders. Some other hitters to watch would be Tanner Gardner. He can swing it and leads the team in batting average. Cory Raley typically DH's and he gets on base frequently. Stephen Smith leads off and is very patient at the plate. If the pitcher isn't throwing strikes leave it to Stephen Smith to draw a walk.”

Fightin’ Gators: How have the Red Raiders handled pressure this year like the prospect of elimination brings?

Mizelle: “They have stepped up to the plate and gotten to this point. The Red Raiders lost in the regional to Dallas Baptist and had to take the final game to Monday and won that game 11-0 to make it to the Supers. Then East Carolina won the first game of the Super Regional, and Tech came back to win the 2nd game in extras and win the 3rd game to make it to Omaha. They are exceptional in high pressure situations and have come out on top in ever do or die situation in the post season.”
