Eight Gators Make Preseason Media All-SEC Team

Jalen Tabor was the only Florida Gator to be listed among the first team units selected by the media in attendance at the SEC Media Days this past week. But, seven others were given second or third team status among the All-SEC players chosen.

With various All-American and All-SEC awards a year ago, Jalen Tabor looks to have a standout junior season at cornerback. Tabor started nine games a year ago, picked off four passes (second in the SEC), and returned two interceptions for touchdowns in 2015. He is widely regarded as one of the top players in the country this season.

Five players were selected as second team members on the preseason ballot including offensive linemen David Sharpe (JR) and Martez Ivey (SO), defensive end Bryan Cox (SR), linebacker Jarrad Davis (SR), and punter Johnny Townsend (R-JR). Defensive lineman CeCe Jefferson (SO) and safety Marcus Maye (R-SR) garnered third team recognition

Ivey and Sharpe return to an offensive line that struggled immensely in 2015 with a lack of experience but were considered the anchors of the young group. As a true sophomore in 2015, Sharpe started all 14 games the Gators played last season. Ivey was named to the SEC Coaches All-Freshman Team following the season after starting the last eight games of the season.

Up front on defense, Cox and Jefferson helped bolster a terrific defensive line in 2015. Cox finished with 45 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks a year ago. As a true freshman, Jefferson came off the bench most of the time and recorded 3.5 sacks as a backup and earned Freshman All-Sec honors as well.

Davis has a real chance to earn All-American honors at linebacker after finishing second on the team in tackles a year ago with 98. He’s earned various preseason All-SEC and All-American honors already and will be in the mix for those at the end of the season.

Maye may have been shortchanged by the vote as the safety earned All-American status from a few publications at the conclusion of the 2015 season. He’s a guy that seems to always be around the ball finishing the year with five forced fumbles and recovering two. He also had 82 tackles n the year in 2015.

Townsend was one of 10 finalists for the Ray Guy Award last season and finished third in the country with a 45.4-yard punting average last season. He also earned a few All-SEC honors last season.

One person that appeared to be overlooked was redshirt junior defensive tackle Caleb Brantley. Brantley has been waiting his turn while turning in solid outings the last two years and is poised to having a huge year.
