The biggest news may be that of star sophomore receiver Antonio Callaway. Florida head coach Jim McElwain said earlier in the day that Callaway was practicing, but that he was in continual pain. McElwain said late Wednesday that Callaway is “highly questionable to doubtful” for the contest.
"Got three periods in and that was about it," the head coach said of Callaway. "Did a couple of things. We’ve got to see that. It loosened up really good this morning when he was in for treatment. We got a lot out of that. Didn’t think we got a lot out of it this afternoon."
The offensive line took a hit also this week. Starting right guard Tyler Jordan will be out for a “couple of weeks” with an undisclosed eye issue. That means he is likely to miss the road contest at Tennessee next week as well. McElwain also mentioned center Cameron Dillard and said the junior dinged his elbow, but should be alright.
“One that came up, Tyler Jordan had a deal with his eye that actually goes back to when he broke his orbital bone," McElwain said. "That’s the eye socket in case you’re wondering. He’s got to get some work done on that so he’ll be out for a couple of weeks anyway. That will give (Richerd) Desir-Jones a chance. In there at guard, obviously, playing both ‘Waanny’ (Jawaan Taylor) and Fred (Fredrick Johnson) at times in there together. We’ll work that as we kind of roll forward. ”
Tyrie Cleveland, the freshman receiver from Texas that was expected to make an impact this year, will miss the contest with a hamstring issue that continues to linger.
Freshman linebacker Jeremiah Moon has been a real positive for the defense in fall camp and with his play on the field. He will now miss the contest Saturday as he has to have surgery on his thumb.
"Jeremiah Moon did something to his thumb, so he’ll have some surgery on that," McElwain said. "So we’ll miss him. He was doing a heck of a job for us, not only at the ‘backer spot but also on special teams. He did a great job."
Backup cornerback Joseph Putu, a junior and junior college transfer that has played well in relief so far this year also was hurt with an ankle injury.
"Putu rolled up, probably a high grade not a low grade," McElwain said. "But we’ll see how that goes.
McElwain did say that junior receiver Dre Massey had surgery today to repair an ACL tear. Massey will have to miss the entire year as his knee heals.
Stay tuned as we bring you the rest of Jim McElwain’s comments after Wednesday’s practice and more here on Fightin’ Gators.
