When Smith was approached by Florida with an offer, the linebacker was already committed to NC State. However, the Gators offer changed things rather quickly. After taking an official to Michigan State, Smith quickly set an official to UF and committed one week after his trip to Gainesville.
"I chose Florida because it honestly felt like home," Smith told Scout. "The coaching staff was amazing, and I felt like I could relate more to the players around me. I could definitely see myself being successful in the Swamp with the type of atmosphere that was felt while I was on my official visit."
"It seems like everybody there is focused on the same goal. I can relate to a lot of them also because most of them are from the south, and that's also a big deal. It's just nice; It's nice to be somewhere I'm used to."
"Smith, who really provides that thud at the point of attack, has to continue to pack on weight and strengthen up his frame, but certainly gives it his all and holds his own in the trenches," said Recruiting Analyst Corey Bender. "Strengthening his upper-body will enable him to really drive through his opponent with force. Smith is at his best when shooting into the backfield, and just being told to go find the football.
"He picks things up quickly and does a nice job of reading and reacting to the football as well. Smith is light on his feet and always has that bounce in his step. Whether he's at linebacker, assisting on special teams, or even lining up as a blocking tight end, Smith is a headhunter that's always on the lookout for contact."
