Monday Practice Report

Martin returns to practice after suffering concussion against Miami. Plus, Starks still doesn't know where he'll end up against FAMU....

Florida QB Ingle Martin, who suffered a concussion during Saturday's 38-33 loss to Miami, practiced Monday and has been cleared to play.

Oddly enough, the junior still can't pinpoint an exact time when the injury occurred. He said he believes it happened during the drive that put the Gators ahead 33-10 – their biggest lead of the night.

"It was one of the last couple of plays [of the drive]," Martin said. "I wasn't going to say anything, but then we scored. I decided I should say something."

The quarterback was then given a series of tests. As a result, trainers decided to keep him sidelined.

Although Martin has suffered several concussions in the past – one of which occurred last spring – he doesn't foresee himself becoming more susceptible to the injury.

"It's usually the first couple of games when it happens," Martin said. "Even before the Miami game, I told Vernell Brown, ‘you might need to hit me in the head before the game.' I just kind of expect it."

It wasn't until after Martin was sidelined that the Hurricanes began their 23-point comeback. He finished 7-for-10 with 114 yards.

While Martin likely will start Saturday against Florida A&M, Coach Ron Zook plans to continue the scheduled rotation with true freshman Chris Leak.

Zook continued to vehemently defend the strategy, claiming it hasn't been proven to fail.

"Who says that it can't work?" Zook said. "Is it written in a book? I keep hearing you can't do it. I'm not saying you can, and I'm not saying you can't. Where we're at right now, this is the best thing for us."

Saturday, Zook played all three quarterbacks, including redshirt freshman Gavin Dickey.

MIXING IT UP: OL Max Starks, who jumped back to left tackle after starting the season at right guard, is unsure where he'll wind up this week.

"It's like the toss of a coin," Starks said. "It's wherever my team needs me. Wherever we need help, I'm willing to play." Against Miami, Starks filled the void left by an injured Tavares Washington.

"Tavares is questionable," Zook said. "His patella tendon slipped out a little bit. It's happened before."

As a result, OL Lance Butler moved into the starting right guard position. Zook said he was happy with the play of the sophomore.

BRIEFLY: Leak said he wasn't fazed by the criticism of his interception in the final seconds against Miami. "I don't worry about it," he said. "I just go out and play. The cornerback made a great play. That's going to happen sometimes."…OL Jonathan Colon practiced Monday for the first time since spraining his knee in a summer scrimmage. OL Anthony Guerrero, who also injured his knee on the same play as Colon, continues to make progress as well. Zook expects both back by next week at the latest….DT Kenny Parker sprained his shoulder in the first quarter Saturday. Although he finished the game, he didn't practice Monday.
