Jashawn Sheffield is one of the top athletes in the 2019 class. The Georgia native ventured down to Gainesville with his 7-on-7 team this month and received plenty of attention from the Florida staff.
"The people and the atmosphere I feel like it's home," said the four-star athlete. "The coaches really got time to talk to me one-on-one this time. I enjoyed talking to [Florida head] coach Mac [Jim McElwain], and he kept telling me to keep my grades in order because I did good today.
But that is not the only message McElwain and Sheffield's area recruiter, UF linebackers coach Tim Skipper had for the Frederica Academy playmaker.
"I need to be a Gator. I need to be a Gator that is what he preached to me," he said.
According to Sheffield, he is being recruited by several schools as an athlete, but he admits that he rather play defense in college; he sees himself as a future defensive back. Florida's reputation at that position is certainly something that intrigues Sheffield.
"The DBs are physical and I like to be physical when I'm on defense. So I like that," he said. "[Former Gators corner] Quincy Wilson, I watch his highlights all the time, so if I go to Florida will I play like this?"
Sheffield visited The Swamp with his entire 7-on-7 team which also included another 2019 Gators target, Jaylin Simpson. Sheffield admits the two are close and would not mind playing for the same team.
“Me and Jaylin are going to play for the same team,” Sheffield said. “One hundred percent. No way it doesn’t happen...That’s been my best friend since fifth grade, so me and him are not going to separate. We keep each other balanced.”
So what does Florida need to do in order to continue to intrigue Sheffield and Simpson?
"Just keep doing what they are doing, Jaylin and I might end up being a Gator."
Although UF is certainly making waves in his recruitment, Sheffield lists a few other schools that he is considering at the moment.
"Florida, FSU, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State and Auburn," said Sheffield when asked about the schools he is talking to. "Some schools that I got offers from they don't even take time to get to know me, but the schools that I just named, they take the time."
Sheffield visited South Carolina the week after his Florida visit for another 7-on-7 tournament, however, he is also planning future visits this summer.
"Hopefully in July I will go back to Florida State and trying to get back up here too," he said. "FSU was the first college game I ever went. I grew up a Georgia fan but I also grew up liking Florida State... It's just a school that I liked watching."
Sheffield still has a while until he will need to make a decision and he is in no rush to do so.
"I really don't know [when I'll make a decision,]" he said. "I just have to talk to my mom.. she doesn't care where I go. She just wants me to go where it helps me and what makes me feel like home."
