MIDNIGHT MADNESS SET FOR OCT. 17

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- In what has grown into one of the great annual traditions on the campus of the University of Florida, Midnight Madness presented by AllTel, signaling the beginning of the basketball season will be held at the O'Connell Center on Oct. 17.

Doors for the event will open at 9 p.m. with festivities beginning with a live concert at 9:30 p.m. Players from both the men's and women's basketball teams as well as coaches will be available for autographs beginning at 10 p.m.

The show will continue with highlight videos, the IFC/PHC Step Show, the Papa John's Sumo Contest, the GRU Dash For Cash, and the Dodge Shoot-Out where someone will have a chance to win a Dodge Truck. The Gator cheerleaders, Dazzlers and pep band will also perform. To great fanfare, the men's and women's basketball teams will then make their debuts after midnight.

Midnight Madness annually draws more than 10,000 fans and another large crowd is expected to be on hand for the 2003 edition of this popular basketball event.

The University Athletic Association will also be supplying the 2003-04 Gator team posters to fans in attendance for player autographs and are asking that no outside items be brought in.

Dodge Shoot-Out … One (1) randomly selected fan will have twenty-four (0:24) seconds to make a lay-up, two (2) three-pointers and a half court shot. To win a Dodge truck.

11:05 p.m.
IFC/PHC Step Show … Various fraternities and sororities will compete to win $500.

11:32 p.m.
GRU Dash for Cash … One fan will be selected, he/she will have thirty (0:30) seconds to make as many free throws as he/she can. Following each made free throw, the contestant must run to mid-court and pick up a ball that is marked with a cash prize. There are five balls which total $250. After the contest is finished, the winners receive prize packs valued at $100 courtesy of GRU and the cheerleaders will throw prizes out to members in their section.

Papa John's Celebrity Sumo Contest … The contest will take place at mid-court. Two celebrities will square off, one representing the blue team and the other representing the orange team. The contest is a best of three knock over/out contest. The sumo wrestler that knocks his/her opponent over or out of the circle two times is the winner. The winner will perform a sumo splash at mid-court immediately following the last knock over/out. Gymnastics mats will be used to protect the basketball court. As the first 2,000 fans enter the facility, they will receive either a blue or orange coupon. If the blue team wins the game, fans can redeem their blue coupons for free breadsticks courtesy of Papa John's. If the orange team wins the game, fans can redeem their blue coupons for free breadsticks courtesy of Papa John's.

AllTel Shoot and Seek Contest … One (1) fan will be selected to participate in a free throw shooting contest. The contestant will shoot ten (10) free throws in an effort to add five (0:05) seconds per free throw made to help search for a cell phone after all ten shots are taken. The contestant will start with 15-seconds in their bank, and any made free throw, will add five seconds to their search. Immediately following the contestant's tenth free throw attempt, he/she will be blindfolded and placed in front of a shaker bin at mid-court. The bin will contain approximately 300 AllTel cell phones with one active phone (ringing/blinking). The contestant will have a maximum amount of sixty-five (1:05) seconds or a minimum of fifteen (0:15) seconds to search for the phone. The grand prize is a cell phone and a year of service courtesy of Alltel. After the contest is finished, the cheerleaders will throw prizes out to members in his/her section.
