UF Leads For Another S

One of the Gator's big recruiting needs is the safety position and they currently are now in great position with three safeties. The latest is Tony Joiner from Haines City, Florida.

Tony Joiner is a three-star safety prospect from Haines City, Florida. Joiner and his teammates finished the season at 4-6 and he finished with 75 tackles and 8 tackles for a loss playing the strong safety position this year.

"I played a lot of run support this year," Joiner said. "We didn't face too many passing teams, mainly options teams."

Last year as a junior, Joiner recorded 130 tackles and 7 interceptions playing both free and strong safety.

In regards to recruiting, Joiner now has a leader.

"Florida offered and they are my leader right now. At first, I was a little upset with the Gators because of what happened to Larry (Kendrick). He was hurt and I was hurt. But everything has worked out for him and I realized I have to do what's best for me and right now, it's Florida. They need safeties bad, it's a great program that puts lots of player in the league (NFL), I love how coach (Charlie) Strong runs that defense and to me, Guss (Scott) has been a standout for four years. I know I can be that same player. Plus, Florida is very close to home."

Joiner is a cousin of former Gator Larry Kendrick. Kendrick left the Florida program and is now playing Junior College football in Mississippi where he had a tremendous season playing receiver.

Joiner is also considering NC State and LSU. "I really like the NC State coach that is recruiting me. He has tremendous energy. Coach Hixson from LSU is from Polk County so we have some stuff in common. Plus, LSU is a great SEC team."

Joiner has not been to too many games this year because he has taken on a weekend job. He is hoping to attend the Florida State/ Florida game next weekend.

"I have been to two FSU games (GT and MIA). I will try and get off work for next weekend's game."
