Florida OT Jonathan Colon made progress as he recovers from a back injury. He remains questionable for the Outback Bowl...

OT Jonathan Colon went through a light workout Monday, his first practice since injuring his back two weeks ago against Florida State.

Coach Ron Zook, who was weary about Colon's chances to play in the Outback Bowl, said he's more optimistic about the status of the former Miami Central High standout.

Colon, the Gators' starter at right guard who has dealt with several injuries in the past, is among the only players currently recovering from injury as the team prepares for their New Year's Day bowl game.

QB Chris Leak was named the Freshman Football Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus this week. The true freshman will be honored at an awards banquet held in Columbus on Feb. 7, 2004.

Leak is one of only three players in the history of the Touchdown Club to win the award as the Best High School Player in the nation and follow up the next year as a collegian award winner. Florida's Emmitt Smith and Ohio State's Maurice Clarett also won the awards in back-to-back years.

BRIEFLY Florida Athletics Director Jeremy Foley said Friday he still hasn't spoken with ACC Comissioner John Swofford about any action taken as a result of the controversial officiating in the game between Florida and Florida State....Zook said he doesn't anticipate any players will be academically ineligible for the bowl game, but he won't know for sure until all final exams have been graded....Florida will practice twice on Saturday and once on Sunday. There will be no published report off of Sunday's practice, as it has been closed to the media. ###
