West Coast Signal Caller Could Come East

With the south looking like it's headed towards a down year for QB's in the Class of '05, many SEC schools seeking a signal caller have began looking out of region for a player to fulfill their needs. One of those quarterbacks catching interest from the southeast is Chris Turner of West Hills, Calif. who threw for an impressive 3400yds and 30TD's last season.

"I have 1 offer so far and it's from Illinois. Right now my top 5 is Notre Dame, Florida, Tennessee, Michigan State and Southern Cal," Chris Turner said.

Who leads early on Turner?

"Notre Dame is my favorite school. I grew up a big Irish fan. I'm not catholic or anything, but I go to a catholic school," he quipped.

What stands out about the other schools on his list?

Florida: "The tradition. I love the SEC. They are a powerhouse team and they have great fans."

Tennessee: "I really like their offense. I talk to Coach Adkins and I really like him a lot."

Michigan St: "I like the Big10 a lot as well, and I've always kind of been a fan of MSU. Charles Rogers is my favorite player."

USC: "They are the local school and it's good to have a program like that so close to home. They are obviously already a major powerhouse."

Turner hinted that the Gators may have the best shot to climb ahead of the Irish, but will Coach Zook and his staff offer the west coast product a scholarship?

"Really, Florida is probably my #2 school. I'm planning on Chris Leak going pro, and that would give me a good chance at Florida. I went there for the spring game and they mentioned they may watch me at Stanford, but I heard the coaches saying that they have changed their recruiting philosophy and that it was unlikely they would even make 1 visit to California this year."

What is most important to the Chaminade Prep star in picking a school to continue his education?

"It's the coaching staff and the offense mainly. I don't want to run the option or anything like that," Chris joked.

What does Turner feel sets him apart from his peers?

"I think I pass very well. My ability to read the defense and then take my reads and make plays."

Chris is a good student who should have no trouble qualifying academically.

"I had a 3.1 GPA last grading period. I took the SAT but I haven't gotten the results back yet. Right now I'm leaning towards majoring in communications, but that's not a final decision.
