Softball Advances with 4-0 Win

The Florida softball team won their first game in the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee, Fla. with a 4-0 win over Long Island Friday morning. The team will play the loser of the South Florida vs. Oregon State game Friday night at 8 p.m.

Florida scored first in the top of the second inning. With one out junior Mandy Schuerman drove a base hit to the short stop. A ground out by Lindsey Cameron advanced Schuerman to second. Freshman Michelle Diaz smacked a double to right field to score Schuerman and give Florida the 1-0 lead.

The Gators added another run in the top of the fourth. Leadoff batter sophomore Lindsey Cameron drove a base hit through the left side. Freshman Shelley Stevens came in to pinch run for her and stolen second. Stevens advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Diaz. Senior Jenilee Garner drove Stevens in with a shallow hit to center to give Florida the 2-0 lead.

Florida added two more runs in the sixth frame. Freshman Lauren Roussell drew the lead off walk, her second of the game and 35th of the season. Sophomore Lindsay Norfleet came in to pinch run for her. Norfleet advanced two bases on a wild pitch. Diaz brought her in and added another run on a home run down the right field line for a 4-0 Florida lead.

Diaz was 2-for-2 on the day with a double, a home run, a sacrifice, a run scored and three RBI.

Senior Amanda Moore earned the win for Florida to improve her record to 7-2 on the season. She allowed only two base runners on the entire game on two hits in the fourth inning.

Florida heads back into action tonight at 8 p.m. They will play the losing team of the South Florida vs. Oregon matchup. South Florida defeated Ohio State 2-0 Thursday to advance while Oregon defeated Ohio State 1-0 to advance. Florida's game Friday evening will air live on WRUF 850 AM.
