INSIDER RECRUITING: Wavering Avery?

The saga of Daytona Beach (FL) Mainland HS defensive back Avery Atkins and his recruitment continues. Fresh off the heels of his trip to LSU for their latest camp session he has opened his recruitment back up to his top 5. He told us that he doesn't want to be considered a commitment right now and that he wants to visit all the places he favors.

Avery Atkins shared his experience at LSU camp with us: "It went very well. I did really good. I liked everything, the whole atmosphere. I hung around E.J. Kuale the whole time while I was there. The coaches there are really cool." He told us he is being recruited there by both Kirby Smart and Coach Saban.

On his commitment to Florida, he said "My options are still open really." We pressed him further for a concrete answer -- was he committed anymore? "No sir. I like Florida still, but I love LSU." He proceeded to name his top five as "LSU, Florida, Florida State, Miami, and Georgia." Are these the five he will probably visit? "Yes sir."

I asked about his uncle who coaches on the basketball staff at Florida State and how that will weigh on his decision to play ball in college, "Not really, I am going to be the one that has to live there or whatever, so it has to be my decision."

Two weeks earlier Avery visited Florida for the Rising Senior's Camp. Although he didn't participate he made a special trip up just to see some folks and the school. He made some great relationships at the Florida camp. "I met Demetrice Morley at the Florida camp, he and I clicked, we were just real cool." Two days following the camp, he made a commitment to play football to Coach Zook and the Gators. Things have changed for him since.

Avery's teammate quarterback Jonathan Garner committed over the weekend to the Gators. Avery commented: "He's a hard working player and a good leader. I think he'll fit right in at Florida."

Avery Atkins is going to be a slippery fish throughout the recruiting season. He wants to take his visits and he likes certain schools. He is a heck of a ball player and the schools are going to keep on recruiting him. He will just have to keep us guessing.
