SEC Media Days - The buzz from Wednesday

The Buzz from Wednesday:
Georgia quarterback David Greene said to look for big things from recevier Bryan McClendan this fall. McClendon is a junior and son of former Dog great Willie McClendon. Greene believes this Dog receiver is poised to make some noise in 2004.

The Georgia folks acknowledged the Florida Gators as a hurdle they must get over to obtain all their goals. Most notably, the National Championship for the Bulldog program. Georgia has lost two games very close the last couple of years but still made it to Atlanta.

When David Pollack was asked about the University of Florida he quickly mentioned that Georgia opens with Georgia Southern. Do you think the Gators are in the heads of the Bulldogs?

Ronnie Fields is the sign of stability for the changing ways at Mississippi State. He has started 25 games on a defensive front in the Southeastern Conference. That earns him merits towards being on of the conference's iron men.

Mark Richt said he was going to move tackle Max Jean-Gilles to guard which is his natural position.Gilles is a junior out of Miami and his tackle position will be manned by Dennis Roland to start fall camp.

Sylvester Croom will bring the West Coast offense to Starkville, but he said only 25% of what he did at Green Bay will actually be incorparated at Mississippi State. He mentioned the all important quarterback postion was a wide open battle with Omar Conner who played in the spring and Kyle York who missed the spring with an injured shoulder being the two who will battle it out.

Rich Brooks does not think coaching in the SEC is that much different than the Pac 10 when he was at Oregon. Kentucky has more talent this season according to Brooks than in 2003.

Coming up Today:

The third and final day of the Media Days in Birmingham should provide great intrigue with both Alabama and Tennessee making their way to the Wynfrey Hotel. Phillip Fulmer who apparently had received threats on his life because of his acitions in reporting Alabama recruiting violations will not be here thursday. As the story goes from earlier in the week, Fulmer's attorneys advised him to incur a $10,000 fine from the SEC and not go in person. The fanfare for Alabama has been gathering here at the hotel and it should still be a wild experience.

The defending national champion LSU will probably be playing second fiddle to the drama, but Nick Saban should merit a lot of attention. Rounding out the foursome is South Carolina and the best quote of the week with Lou Holtz. This should be an interesting day for SEC football with these four teams on hand.

Football players make there way here as well including LSU's Ben Wilkerson , Tennessee's Michael Munoz, Alabama's Wesley Britt and South Carolina's George Gause. The theme should be about lineman but Vol linebacker Kevin Burnett and Tiger defensive back Corey Webster should garner plenty of attention

If you don't think the Florida-Tennessee game is big look at the Vols conference schedule. Tennessee only plays four bowl teams from last season. They will play two of them at home in the first month of the season with Florida on Sept 18 and Auburn on Oct 2.

The results of the media's vote for All SEC and the overall race will be released today. Here are my picks in the conference race and my votes for first and second team all conference. I picked my players based on how I think they will play this season. This makes sense to me because that's how we pick the teams but many media members just vote for who is here and who had great years last season.
