FOOTBALL: Coach Zook Q & A

Coach Zook started out his question and answer session after practice with a quick shout-out to the fans and their support during the stormy weekend for the Kentucky game. <p> "One thing I wanted to do and forgot to do Saturday night was to thank the people Saturday for being here."

He emphasized the importance of the fans in attendance during the big games.

"It is very important for them to be here especially for the next two games. Or fans give us energy to play and when they give us energy, we use it. The next two games are SEC games, they are very important. There place was a tough place to play last year. I want them to se what it is like to play in the swamp."

On DeShawn Wynn and his being upset over not getting the ball on Saturday…

"DeShawn had as good a practice today as he has ever had. One thing about DeShawn is he is a prideful guy, he wants to play and he wants to win. You never can have too many running backs and good players. There is no doubt that DeShawn Wynn is a good, good football player. I talked to him yesterday and today and he is fine. This is the best practice I have ever seen him have."

On dealing with disappointment of not getting enough playing time…

"The good thing is we take good people, and I really don't tell them anything that they do not already know. I told Gavin Dickey today that he probably has the toughest job in football. In the NFL they always worry about the back-up quarterback because he has to be ready to go in, because God forbid something happens and he has to lead the team. Here is Gavin who is a great player an athlete and played an awful lot of football and can do it. It's hard when you want to play."

On Mike Degory's injury…

"Mike Degory is fine, he has a headache and had one yesterday. He is out there still making all the calls even though he didn't do much today."

On the Gators leading the conference in third down conversions…

"Third down football is big, just like red-zone football is big and 2-minute football is big. We stress it and have had some success at it. Obviously if you keep drives alive it's the difference in staying on the field and having a lot of plays and not. One of the reasons our defense did so well was we weren't on the field that much."

On Matt Leach and his misses…

He's not going through a slump. He got one blocked that wasn't his fault. I went back to look at the Tennessee one again. I wanted to see who was sitting underneath that goal post. I don't worry about him (Leach) at all. He knows that I and this football team have all the confidence in the world in him and I told him last year, 'You're the kicker. I don't care what you do, you're the kicker. I'd like for you to be 100%, you'd like for you to be 100%, but you are not going to be.' If I wanted him to be 100%, then maybe we wouldn't let him take some chances that we do. When you have a good kicker, you don't worry about him.
