Women's golf finishes eighth at shootout
The Wisconsin women's golf team finished eighth in a 12-team pool at the Legends Shootout in Franklin, Ind., Oct. 4-5. Wisconsin finished with a 929 (309-313-307) while Notre Dame won with a 901 (298-304-299).
Freshman Katie Elliott led the Badgers with a 228 (76-74-78) to tie for 11th. Junior Lindsay McMillan finished in a tie for 14th with a 230 (77-81-72) while freshman Mayumi Kobayashi had her best career outing as a Badger with a 238 (76-85-77) to tie for 28th.
Martin and McGaffigan win first ITA match
Women's tennis players seniors Lindsay Martin and Katie McGaffigan, the No. 16 doubles team in the nation, advanced at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles Tuesday. Martin and McGaffigan defeated Duke's Katie Blaszak and Jackie Carleton 9-8 (6) and will face Clemson's Julie Coin and Romy Farah Wednesday.
In singles action, McGaffigan earned an automatic bid to the singles qualifying round and defeated Lydsay Shosho of Georgia Tech, 6-0, 6-7, 6-2 but fell to UCLA's Riza Zalameda, 2-6, 4-6. Sophomore Caitlin Burke also made the singles qualifying round after winning her bracket in the pre-qualifying rounds. She defeated Alabama's Ashley Bentley (6-4, 6-2) Tuesday but lost to USC's Nicole Leimbach 3-6, 2-6 later in the day.
In the polls …
The Wisconsin men's cross country team remains at the top of the Mondo Men's Cross Country poll and the team received all 14 of the first-place votes for the second straight week. Stanford is still No. 2. The Mondo poll is conducted by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.
The women's hockey team enters the preseason as the No. 3 team in the nation, according to the U.S. College Hockey Online poll released Oct. 4. The Badgers, however, are fifth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll. Minnesota and Dartmouth claimed the top two spots in both polls.
USCHO also compiled its preseason all-American teams and Molly Engstrom made the first-team roster while fellow senior defenseman Carla MacLeod earned a second-team spot. Junior goaltender Meghan Horras was on the honorable mention list.
