RECRUITING: Jarvis Hicks has high interest in UF

Deerfield Beach HS (FL) is off to a 4-0 start this season, thanks in large part to a very talented team. One of the more heralded players on the team is safety / linebacker Jarvis Hicks. The 6-1, 195 pound senior is a headhunter from both positions. Josh Giggey, who covers South Florida for, says of Hicks: "Josh is big time playmaking senior He's getting major D-1 attention because of his ability to just flat out make big plays."

We talked to Jarvis Hicks this week and he was enthused about his season so far. "The season is going great. I am playing pretty good, and just on defense." He told us he lines up in different positions but does have a preference at this level. "I am playing right outside linebacker and safety. I like linebacker better." Some schools project him as a safety, will that be ok with him? "That's good too, I just like linebacker because you get more action. I bring speed, sideline to sideline. I stay focused and read my keys. Come up when I need to make the big hit."

As for as his academic status, he said: "School is going great." He hasn't had luck taking the SAT exam yet. "The SAT was postponed because of the hurricanes, so I haven't taken them yet. I took my FCAT retake today."

September 1st marked the first time coaches could call once a week and he has a list of schools that are very interested and doing just that. "Florida, Indiana, West Virginia, South Florida, and Louisiana Lafayette."

Does he have any interest in West Virginia? "Yes, I am majoring in criminal justice. I have talked to a couple of people and they said have a good program there. It's a young team, but the position I want to play has a lot of seniors, so I think I can get a lot of playing time there. I haven't been there."

What peaks his interest in South Florida? "I like their coaching staff also. They are pretty good academically. I also have a cousin over there that is just attending school there." Has he been there to visit? "I went there once for a camp."

Through our whole conversation there was one team that stood out the most to Hicks. "At Florida I like the coaching staff. They tell me I project as a safety." Hicks attended camp this summer at Florida and the coaches came away impressed enough for him to receive an offer to play ball at the school. "The camp was perfect, it was special. I like their staff the best. I got a chance to sit down with the head coach and the whole coaching staff. They didn't beat around the bush. They didn't guarantee me anything, but they said if I just come to play they don't bypass freshmen. Coach Miller has been calling me a lot, and I talk to Coach Disch all the time.

There are a lot of things that will play into his college decision. One of them will be depth charts. "I look at them a lot." He also plans on taking all of his visits in January. He does plan on attending a few college football games this season and has one scheduled very shortly. "This weekend I am going to the Florida / LSU game."

Jarvis Hicks is a good athlete with not a lot of attention, at least not from a media standpoint. He has garnered attention from some big schools including at least one of the big-3 in that state of Florida. Word is, he is about to make an even bigger splash.
