The Gators are actually recruiting him as a linebacker, which isn't exactly where he has been playing as a prepster. "I'm playing exclusively at defensive end." He is racking up the tackles, but is uncertain how many he actually has. He does have four sacks from his defensive end position.
He is a good student, but modest about his own scholastic aptitude. "School is going ok and testing is going well."
Is he set at playing a certain position at the collegiate level? He certainly sounded flexible when he said, "I could play linebacker or defensive end at the next level; it is up to the school I go to."
A host of schools are still calling but six are at the top right now. He says they are: "N.C.State, Florida, Miami, Virginia, Tennessee, and Maryland."
He was very non-committal about what he liked from the schools on his list. "I like the same things from all the schools. They have good facilities and good coaching staffs."
January should be a busy month for Newell since he doesn't have plans on attending any games and will take all of his visits. "My visits will probably come from the list of schools above." Is he watching these teams and getting a feel for them? "I haven't been to any games this year but have seen most of them on television."
Finally, what criteria is the final college choice going to be based on? "My decision will be based on how I love the school. By that I mean the school itself, the community, the coaching staff, and the players."
Kyle is a rangy linebacker who has sideline to sideline capability thanks to his 4.5 40 time. His size and versality should make him an excellent defender in space.
Kyle Newell is somewhat of a new name Gator fans will have to start paying more attention to. Linebacker is a dire need position this year and Newell fits what the Gators are looking for.
