My first question to Tony was to the point. I told him that there was a rumor going around that he had committed to the Florida Gators and I was interested to know if it were true or not. He answered simply, "Yeah." Tony also told me that he was excited at the opportunities that playing for the Gators presented. He feels that the situation fits him well. Tony also said he was excited at the proposition of playing for Steve Spurrier, should he return to Florida as the head coach. He gave a wry giggle at that answer.
When asked about Florida's future prospects Tony was again to the point when he said, "It's pretty good." He gave the same answer when asked about what he thought about Ciatrick Fason and the other backs at UF and how they are being used currently.
Tony told us that he made his commitment to Florida about two weeks ago and made his commitment to Coach Dan Disch. Obviously, quite a lot has happened at Florida with the coaching staff since his commitment. Why did Tony commit to UF at this point in time? "It's where I really wanted to go. I like how they run things over there." Has this news made any difference to him since making the commitment to Coach Disch? "Not really." Tony also told us that he is planning on taking an official visit to Florida sometime this month. We wondered about that since the new staff more than likely will not be announced by that time, but Tony said he had not given it any thought. That makes sense considering that the staff change had no effect on his commitment.
Jamie Newberg, national recruiting analyst for Scout.com, said: "In my opinion Tony Wright is one of the top running backs in the nation. He's part of our national top 100 because he's a versatile back that can run and catch. Wright has a nice combination of size, speed, power and elusiveness. He can make you miss and if you arm tackle him he'll run right through you. Wright is a nice addition for the Gators."
In addition, Scott Kennedy, South Recruiting Analyst for the network, says: "He's the top rated back in Georgia with excellent vision and balance. Wright shows good power, break tackles and has excellent speed. He's also a weapon out the backfield with great hands. The timing of the commitment surprised me but that tells you how much he wants to be a Florida Gator."
Tony says he will be qualified come time and that he has taken his tests but has not received the results as of yet. We would like to offer hearty congratulations to Tony on his commitment and wish him a terrific career as a Florida Gator!
