RECRUITING: Atkins, Mainland prep for Hollywood

Daytona Beach Mainland defensive back Avery Atkins said that the Class 4A third ranked Buccaneers are preparing for their showdown versus Class 2A #2 Chaminade High School in Hollywood on Thursday afternoon. "We're getting ready. We leave on a Wednesday morning charter. It's kind of weird because we'll be playing them at three o'clock on Thursday".

Mainland (7-1) knocked off top ranked Orlando Edgewater 40-9 on the road three weeks ago. The Bucs should be able to turn it loose, as they have already wrapped up the Class 4A District 4 title. Mainland is averaging 30.1 points per game while giving up just 7 points per game. The defending state champion Bucs were the preseason pick for a 4A rematch with Naples in Gainesville.

Chaminade is averaging 31.8 points per game. Defensively, the Lions are holding the opposition to 7.5 points per game. Chaminade knocked off Class 5A #9 Miami Edison 9-2 a week ago. The Lions are the odds on favorites to meet top ranked Madison County in the FHSAA State Finals. Chaminade blasted the Cowboys 27-0 in last season's state finals. Chaminade also beat the Bucs in a regular season match-up in 2003.

"I'm still a Gator, but I just want to see what's going to happen with the staff. When asked if he was indeed one of those invited to Knoxville for the Notre Dame/Tennessee game, he said that he hasn't heard from them at this time. "That wouldn't do much for me. They're not one of the schools that I've been interested in. Right now, Coach (Kirby) Smart (LSU) has left a couple of messages for me. They are really trying to get me over there." Avery Atkins said.

The All-American admitted that he is receiving plenty of calls from coaches and recruiting services but stated, "I'll be making my announcement on Countdown to Signing Day"
