FOOTBALL: Q & A with Ciatrick Fason

Ciatrick Fason talks with Gator Country about the upcoming Vanderbilt game, his goal of reaching 1,000 yards or more, his offensive line, and much more.

On getting 1,000 yards or more…

It makes me feel good, because you kind of aim for 1,000. The offensive line wants it more than me, so it makes me even more happy they are going to go out there and block good enough for me to get it. They said if I get 1,000 yards this week to get ready to get 1300 for the season. I am going to try and go out there and run and they tell me they will make holes. I am just going to try and make the class of the other running backs at UF that have made the 1,000 yard club.

On the Offensive line…

I always said coming into the season that or offensive line was going to be the strength of our offense and it really has been. They have been opening up holes for the running game and keeping people off of Chris and keeping a pocket for a long time. If they are having a good game, we are having a good game. If they are having a bad one, we will have a bad one. A lot f credit goes to the offensive line, they are what makes our offense go.

What impact did past Gator running backs have on you?

That was a big part of me coming here. I used to watch all the other schools like the Miamis, the Florida States and watch their running backs. Then I started watching Fred Taylor and saw what he did when he was here. Then they started talking about Emmit and that was one of the big reasons I came, the amount of great running backs they had come before me and that was a big part of me coming here. Im just glad I can go in a class with those guys.

Planning on going pro after the big season?

I really can't tell you that right now. I feel like before I leave UF I want a ring. It doesn't matter, SEC or National Championship it doesn't matter, I just want a ring. I really can't answer that right now, there are a lot of things going on and I am just trying to go out there and play these last three games an hopefully a bowl game real hard. Then we will see what happens in the off-season.

Do you think it is ok for Adrian Peterson to be considered for the Heisman Trophy?

I think it is good. Everyone says that if you are not a junior or senior you can't win it and in the past, that was right. Last year, we felt like Larry Fitzgerald should have gotten it. Herschel Walker he should have had it, he had a great freshman and sophomore year too. Now you have Adrian Peterson running away with it. He is doing his job plus his team is winning. I'm just glad for him and glad he is the type of player that is going out there and playing for the team.

Could you have run like that with that many carries?

There is no telling. I feel like I can because I am that type of person that says I could do it if I just had the opportunity. He is getting his opportunity and he is running away with it. I am doing what I can with my carries, and I am just glad that both of us are being successful.

Are you better than he is?

I can't answer that question.

Did you think you were going to have a great year?

I felt like every year was going to be a great year. I told coach to just give me the ball, and he told me he was going to give it to me. He put the ball in my hands and I just want to go out there and do what I can do. The players put a lot of pressure on my back to have big year, so I didn't want to prove them wrong.

Are you going to award your linemen if you get 1,000 yards?

I have something planned, but they don't know about it. If I get that (1000 yards), I am going to do something for them.

What about the relationship between you and the linemen?

Before the Tennessee game, the O-Line and the running backs, we all went out to Ballyhoos (restaurant) and had a blast. From that point on, we always go out once a week to talk about football, talk about life. We talk about what each of us are going to do after football, after college. The running backs and o-line became real tight.

Do you have a favorite offensive lineman?

I talk to all of my o-linemen, they will tell you that there aren't any favorites. I talk to all of them like they are all-Americans. It doesn't matter if you are a starter or not a starter, I am going to treat you all the same because any one of them could be blocking for me at any time.

How important is it to the offensive line for you to rush for a lot of yards?

I think it is real important to them because they worry about it more than I do. They came to me and told me I need 116(yards). They said you need to get it (this week), because we are aiming for 1300. I already know what they want. They told me if we get it this week, to get ready to saddle up and just ride them. Sometimes they tell coach to run the ball and quit passing because they always want to run. I think it is more important to them than it is to me.

Is there talk of bowl expectations?

We talk about it a lot. At the University of Florida it is hard because we have never been in a situation where we had to win two games and we only have three left, so now we are fighting. I think we have a lot of sense of urgency and everyone is going to go out there and play hard because everyone is talking about bowl week and what we have to do to get there. I feel like the next few games will be huge for us. We know what we have to do to go out there and play our game and try and get the victory so we can get to bowl week.
