Haupt's season ended his season a little bit earlier than he anticipated when Merritt Island lost in the final 15 seconds of its state quarter-final game last week. The sad ending to the final game doesn't take away a dominating season in which he admits, "I averaged about 12 pancakes a game."
With football over, he's turned his attention to finishing up his high school courses. He plans to be an early college enrollee and he's got a clear leader that should see him on campus the first week in January, which would give him the head start of participating in spring practice.
"Florida is in the lead by a lot," said the outstanding student/athlete whose long range plans include medical school.
Early enrollment, he believes, will give him a shot at early playing time.
"I'm planning on coming in for the Spring and make a case for myself to play as a freshman," said the 300-pounder who is projected to play either guard or center. "I'm looking to fit in wherever I can, wherever the coach can use me that's where I will go."
As far as his recruitment, the Gator coaches have stayed on him through the rough time of not knowing what the coaching situation is going to be for Florida next year. He says even with the adversity, the Florida coaches have been very professional and have stayed with him.
"I talk to Coach Locksley every week and he came by my school on Monday," said Eddie Haupt. "He says it is his job to recruit for Florida and that's probably where I want to go. It is a good school. It is close. I am confident that they will bring in good coaches."
While he hasn't maintained contact with many of the Gator players, he does keep a regular dialogue going with Gator guard Steve Rissler. He's also planning to attend Saturday's Virgina Tech-Miami game in the Orange Bowl.
Due to his planned early enrollment, he plans to make his college choice known on "Countdown to Signing Day" which is hosted by Scout.com recruiting guru Jamie Newberg.
Though he won't announce his commitment yet, all signs point to Haupt making the Gator nation very happy in the next week or two.
