The same skills that make Calvin a good basketball player have made him one of the top O-Line prospects in the South and one of the top two O-Line prospects in the state of Mississippi. Wilson says, "My quickness and leadership ability have been my biggest assets."
He played no small part in leading Hattiesburg High to an 8-4 season and a berth in the Mississippi High School playoffs. His 5.1 forty time speaks volumes for the quickness the 340-pounder brings to the table.
So, what are the things Wilson is focused on as he tries to decide where he will play his college football?
"I'd say that academics, the atmosphere of the school, how well I get along with the coaches and the chance to start early are the things I'm looking at most," he said, adding that it would be nice to be able to play college ball close to home.
Calvin's top five schools (in no particular order) are LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Florida. Asked if the the recent announcement that Coach Nick Saban was leaving LSU would have an impact on his decision, Wilson said, "Anytime there is a big coaching change you have to take a closer look at what will happen next."
Speaking of recent changes Wilson said new Gator head coach Urban Meyer has talked to him a couple of times and he said, "I'm liking him more and more."
He has also talked with new Gator offensive line coach, John Hevesy, recently. He confirmed that he will make his fifth and final official visit to Gainesville and the University of Florida on January 28 and is "looking forward to getting to know the coaches and players a lot better."
At this point, Calvin Wilson is really enjoying the recruiting process and is going to enjoy his other official visits to Auburn (1/7), Mississippi State (1/14) and Ole Miss (1/21). He has already made an official visit to LSU (12/3).
As for a favorite he said, "I'd have to say there is no outright leader right now but Mississippi State may hold a slight edge."
So, is he saving the best for last when he visits Florida on 1/28?
"We'll see how it goes and make a decision after I make all my visits," he said.
