RECRUITING: Surgan resists UF offer from Meyer

Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas kicker Joe Surgan faced one last visit from Florida coach Urban Meyer. One of the state's strongest legs had committed to Duke back in July after receiving no interest from the former Florida staff.

If anything could change Surgan's mind it was hoped that an in-home visit from Coach Meyer and an offer of a scholarship could do it.

"I spoke with Coach Meyer last Monday," the 6-4, 220-pound All-State kicker said. "They offered me a scholarship on Wednesday, just before I left for my visit to Duke. I told them that I would consider their offer but that it would be based on my trip to Duke"

Surgan had captured the Blue Devils interest with his strong leg as a junior at American Heritage High School where he split the uprights on eight of his 10 field goal attempts. This past season, Surgan transferred to Aquinas where he hit 15 of 18 and sent 90 per cent of his kickoffs through the back of the end zone.

"Upon my return from Duke I spoke with Coach (Doc) Holliday and told him that I was done," Surgan said. "I enjoyed my visit to Duke. It is what I'm looking for, so I'm finished."

Just as Joe Surgan did when he received no interest from Florida, now the Gators must turn their attention elsewhere.
