UPDATED Macko story

Armwood High School place kicker Reid Macko was just named second team All-State. Not bad for a guy who had to break in a new holder. The special teams were an early season adventure for Armwood but things smoothed out as the season progressed.

Despite the problems early on, Macko was a factor in helping Armwood to its second consecutive State 4A Championship. No other school in the history of Hillsborough County has accomplished the feat. During the season Macko hit field goals from 48, 50, and 51 yards. As a junior, Macko hit 9 of his 12 attempts including a career best 53-yarder. He said that he hit a 62-yard field goal in "The Swamp" practicing before the state title game.

Macko is one of the best kickers remaining on the recruiting board. The Florida Gators had an interest in Andrew Friedman and offered a scholarship to Joe Surgan but Friedman will walk on at Alabama and Surgan has given a verbal commitment to Duke.

"I haven't really heard from Florida in awhile," Macko confessed. "I received a few letters from Coach (Urban) Meyer but I haven't spoken to anybody up there. I'd love to hear from Florida. That would be great."

Reid Macko first got my attention at the 2003 state championship games in Gainesville as he nailed one field goal attempt another from 50-plus yards in pre-game. The balls were landing in the stands. Gator County's Larry Vettel was part of the team calling the game for Sunshine Network. During the halftime break, Vettel and I talked about Macko's incredible leg.

I watched Armwood take on Middleton High School earlier this season. Macko launched several of the kickoffs through the back of the endzone. He put one between the uprights on the kickoff.

"The coaches at Akron asked for a video of me kicking off of the ground," Macko said. "We'll (Macko and his coach) be sending that up to them. I would gladly send one into the coaches at Florida. I think that I'll have my coach call them tomorrow."

I asked if Macko would consider walking on at Florida?

"Well, sure. I'd consider it," he said after some thought. "I'd like to know what they have and if they would consider signing me to a scholarship in a year if I go up there and win a job. The coaches at UCF (Central Florida) have asked me to walk-on."
