RECRUITING: Atkins will announce commit on CTSD

Daytona Beach Mainland's five-star cornerback Avery Atkins has been a non-stop traveler since the Buccaneers completed their season in December. This past weekend, the 5-11, 185-pound All-American was in Tallahassee to check out Florida State.

While competing for Team Florida in the CaliFlorida All-Star Game in Miami he took a small side trip over to Coral Gables to check out the campus at the University of Miami. Since then, he's taken official visits to South Carolina and FSU.

Although he is committed to the Florida Gators, Atkins chose to visit Florida State with the hope of making certain that his choice of UF is the right one.

"The trip [to Tallahassee] was okay," he said. "It just wasn't really all that. There wasn't really nothing special about it. I stayed in my hotel suite a lot of the time."

I was particularly curious with the FSU coaching staff's reaction to his Florida commitment, and exactly what angle they would take to capture Atkins' attention.

"Coach [Bobby] Bowden told me that I'd have to wait to play," Atkins said with a chuckle. "He said that they like bringing players along slowly. I wasn't really with that."

With Florida State officially out of the picture, Avery Atkins and Mainland teammate Brian Ellis (6-3, 235, tight end) can visit Gainesville with their sole focus on the Orange and Blue.

"I'm really looking forward to my trip to Florida," Atkins said. "I'll publicly commit on Countdown to Signing Day on the 2nd."
