MEN'S TENNIS: Gators shut out Furman 7-0

The third-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team had to earn the doubles point before taking straight set wins in all of the singles matches as the Gators defeated Furman on Friday evening in Gainesville, 7-0. With the win, Florida moved to 2-0 on the season while the loss came in the season opener for the Paladins.

Florida got off to a slow start in doubles, but rallied from deficits on courts one and three to win the point. UF's Nestor Briceno and Vladimir Obradovic were defeated by Furman's Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk, 8-3, on court two leaving the Gators needing wins at the top and bottom of the lineup.

Florida's Jordan Dolberg and Ryan Sherry were trailing Furman's Scott Kahler and Kevin Lackey on court three 7-5, before evening things and eventually claiming a tiebreaker to win their match 9-8 (6). Within second, UF's Hamid Mirzadeh and Chris Brandi provided the clincher as they were pushed by Furman's Allen Simmons and Andy Sobczyk on court one before coming away with an 8-6 victory.

Redshirt junior Ryan Sherry quickly gave Florida a 2-0 lead as he defeated Sobczyk on court six 6-2, 6-0 in 50 minutes. Through his first two matches of the season, Sherry has not given up more than two games to his opponent in any set.

Mirzadeh stretched things to 3-0 when he defeated Pahluhn, 6-1, 6-3 on court one. Ten minutes later the Stefan Tell gave the Gators the win as he defeated Furman's B.J. James, 6-0, 6-3 on court five.

Brandi made it a 5-0 a match in Florida's favor when he defeated Greg Maarschalk on court three, 6-1, 6-4. The position matched the highest Brandi has ever played in his Florida career (vs. UCLA, Feb. 6, 2004).

Briceno fell behind in both sets against Brennan Phillips, 5-3 in the first and 4-1 in the second before going on to win both by a score of 7-5. Obradovic rounded out the list of UF's winners as he posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Simmons on court two.

Florida makes its first road trip of the season as the Gators visit ninth-ranked Duke on Sunday at 1 p.m. UF will take on the Blue Devils in the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on campus
