Meyer to throw first pitch at baseball opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer will help the Gator baseball team raise the curtain on its 2005 season by throwing out the first pitch at Friday's season opener. Fourth-year head coach Pat McMahon's club will host Charleston Southern at McKethan Stadium beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Meyer was a 13th-round selection in the 1982 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft as a shortstop. He spent two years in the Atlanta Braves' organization, playing in the summer of 1982 with Sarasota of the Rookie League and Pulasky (Va.), a Class A team in 1983.

In other Gator football news, assistant coach Doc Holliday was named a Top 25 recruiter for 2005 by various services. Holliday, who became a two-time selection, helped the Gators land's 11th-ranked recruiting class after joining the staff on Dec. 16, 2004.
