RECRUITING: A Sleeper No More

Every year there are at least 1-2 prospects that slide under the radar heading into their senior seasons. This year one of those prospects that fit that mold is Tyler Rice of St. Andrews High School in Boca.

I had the privilege to watch a couple of game tapes of Rice and he may have had one of the biggest hits you will ever see in High School. What makes Tyler Rice so special? He is a 6-foot-4, 241 pound heat seeking missile that plays linebacker in Palm Beach County.

Rice last year finished on the 1st Team All-Palm Beach list and 1st Team-All Boca News list. He also registered an impressive 129 tackles last year along with 6 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries and one interception.

With recruiting just heating up, Rice and had the chance to talk about some of the schools he is most interested in.

"I like Michigan, Boston College, UCLA, Duke and Florida," said Rice

With most prospects that are from Florida one typically things that the big three of Miami, FSU and Florida would top the list. As seen Rice mentioned a lot of out of state schools. What is the reasoning behind this?

"I am originally from Seattle, Washington so I really don't have any ties to the Florida schools," Rice said.

What will be one of the most important things in choosing a school for Rice,?

"I want to attend a school that stresses academics. Location and Academics will be two keys in choosing the right school for me."

Recently Rice received his first scholarship offer. Which school got a heads start in recruiting battle for Tyler?

"Duke was the first and only one to offer at this time. They have shown a lot of interest."

Another thing Rice spoke to us about was the level of competition he plays against.

"A lot of people may bring up the competition level that I play at, but what they don't realize is the talent level all over Florida is better than most other states."

Rice will decide next month on where he will attend camp. One thing is for certain, Rice will take all five visits before making a decision on a college. He mentioned to that he visited Florida State last year for the University of Florida game.
