BASEBALL: Florida Gators to host NCAA Regional

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Florida learned on Sunday afternoon that it was awarded one of 16 NCAA Baseball Regional sites. Four teams will compete at McKethan Stadium in a double-elimination tournament starting on Friday, June 3. The winner will advance to the best-of-three Super Regional to be held the following weekend at eight different sites. The 64-team field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced live on ESPN on Monday morning at 11:30 a.m.

"We're extremely excited about hosting," head coach Pat McMahon said. "It's wonderful news for the program, our players, the University and the fans. We will have four outstanding ballclubs in a very tough regional. It will be a stiff test for us in every way."

Florida (40-20) finished 2-2 at the SEC Tournament after winning the league's regular-season crown for the first time since 1998. The Gators defeated Arkansas (9-8) and Ole Miss (10-7) in their first two outings at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium but were then defeated by the Rebels twice to be eliminated.

UF will be hosting its first NCAA Regional action since 2002, when it advanced to the final before falling to Miami (Fla.) by a run. McKethan Stadium has been the site of six NCAA Regionals during its existence, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1996, 1998 and 2002. Prior to the 1999 season, when the new NCAA Super Regional format was introduced, the Orange and Blue has advanced to the College World Series in three times it has hosted NCAA play: 1991, 1996 and 1998.

The University Athletic Association ticket office will be accepting orders for the Gainesville NCAA Regional Baseball Tournament. Current baseball season-ticket holders will have until Wednesday, June 1 at 12 noon to reclaim their current seats for the tournament. The ticket office will be open on Tuesday (closed Monday for Memorial Day) at 8:30 a.m. and season- ticket holders may purchase and pick up their tickets at the Gator Ticket Office on the West side of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. This will be the best and easiest way to get your tickets.
