"I loved the camp," Ellis said. "Coach (Greg) Mattison is awesome … he is a good coach. I enjoyed myself … I was a little out of shape, but I think I got it done. I learned a lot of new stuff."
He only came for one night and day this time, but the trip marked the second time Ellis visited Gainesville. During the last week of spring practice, Ellis joined a more than 200 junior football players from around the state and the southeast in Gainesville for a Junior Day. He likes what he sees in Gainesville and the campus.
"That was my second trip to Gainesville," he said. "I came down for Junior Day. I love the town … it is a beautiful town and a beautiful school. I call the coaches now and then."
The staff liked what they saw in Ellis and had just the one concern with him: telling the big guy he may have to drop a few pounds to find a desirable playing weight.
"They said I did a good job, but I need to lose a little weight," he said. "I think I want to get to 305-310, but I don't want to say what I weigh right now."
The experience was enjoyable with the other campers, too. He had briefly met a few of the campers already but he quickly mixed with some of the new guys and left with a few new friends.
"I didn't really know anyone … I was only there for one day," he said. "I thought the (Pompano Beach) Ely kids were well coached. I know some of the Glades Central kids. Everyone was nice and it was a good experience, it was fun and I learned a lot of stuff."
He doesn't say much about the recruiting process. He simply doesn't want to tip his hand either way. He is very guarded about the information he passes along. He has no favorites. He also doesn't want to make a spectacle out of his recruitment by naming big schools on his list.
"I am undecided, I don't like to talk about favorites," he said. "I am not a bragger or anything."
REDMAN REACTION: The fact that the Florida coaches are talking to him about his weight is a sure sign of their interest. Kenrick Ellis has the kind of size and ability to be a dominator in the middle. The Jamaican-born Ellis is easily one of the most likeable kids you will find anywhere.
