Damian Williams commited to the Florida Gators on Arkansas television station KNWA this early evening. He is the second of the fabled Springdale Five to commit to the Florida Gators, following the lead of tight end Ben Cleveland who committed to Coach Urban Meyer last week.

As confirmed first anywhere else on Gator Country's hot message boards, he will become the ninth verbal commitment to the Gators, joining quarterback Jevan Snead (Stephenville, TX); running back/defensive back Chevon Walker (Fort Myers, FL); offensive lineman Carl Johnson (Durham, NC); defensive lineman Corey Hobbs (Oviedo, FL), defensive lineman Terron Sanders (Bradenton, FL); linebacker Dustin Doe (Jasper, FL), defensive back Markihe Anderson (Fort Meyers, FL) and Cleveland in a Florida recruiting class that is gaining momentum.

On KNWA, Damain said: "After much consideration my parents and I have decided that I will continue my education at the University of Florida at Gainesville."

He also hinted that it was somewhat of a difficult decision, but that it helped UF's academics are nationally ranked.

"I am very blessed to have received offers from some of the top universities in the country, due to the caliber of these great schools my decision was very difficult. The recruiting process has allowed me to meet some of the greatest coaches and athletes in collegiate football, for this I will always be grateful."

"I extend a special thanks to coach Nutt and the Razorbacks coaching staff for the time and interest that has been devoted to me," Williams continued. "I wish you the best in the upcoming season. However the time has come that coach Malzahn and the Springdale Bulldogs deserve my full attention and I owe it to my teammates to help contribute to our motto, 'One year, one team, one goal' Go Bulldogs!"

In an injury-marred season in 2004, Williams caught 31 passes for 545 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for 130 yards (7 yards per carry) and returned kicks and punts in a season in which he scored eight touchdowns for a Springdale team that made it to the state semi-finals with a 12-1 record.

Williams, who has been timed at 4.4 in the 40-yard dash, is fully qualified. He has a 3.8 grade point average and a 22 on the ACT. He has a 3.8 grade point average and has scored a 22 on the ACT although he plans to take the ACT once again to get a higher score.

Williams had 27 scholarship offers from such notable schools as Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Texas and Texas A&M but it was Florida that really impressed him. He visited Florida twice unofficially during the summer, once with his coach and the second time with his family.

In an earlier interview with Gator Country, Williams described himself as "a versatile player and can be a big play receiver or a possession guy, whatever they need at the time."
