FOOTBALL: In the Player's Words...

Here's several quotes from several players on last week's game against Wyoming. Many of these quote haven't been heard yet, so read on for the scoop.

Mike Degory

On the offensive line play in the Wyoming game…..

We have to perform better. Some stuff is definitely controllable like the mechanics of just calling the play and getting the snaps. I guess it is kind of good to get the shakiness out of the way, but we have a long way to go. A lot of things were wrong. We are kind of in a new system up front, and maybe we just don't have a feel for it yet. I think we finally relaxed and took a deep breath and realized the situation we were in.

On getting new looks from the defense and how it affected the play…

You try and prepare as much as possible, but there is always that chance that you see something you didn't prepare for. I don't think that we saw anything we didn't prepare for, but maybe we didn't see it as much as we should. That is why defensive coordinator's have their job, they gave us something we didn't prepare for and gave us something brand new.

On the bad snaps…

Chris and I with the fumbled snaps, I take full responsibility. This is my last year, I have a lot invested here and for me to make a mistake like that, stuff like that adds up. Only one (snap) went under center, and it was low. Obviously we don't practice that much being out of the shotgun all the time, but Chris and I should have a feel for each other, and I take full responsibility for it.

On the lack of run production…

We have to have more than 40 yards rushing to stay with anyone. Even this upcoming week, we need to push the running game.

On seeing the Gator head outside the locker room for the first time in months…

We saw it once we ran out of the tunnel. It was gone, I don't know where. We were pretty pumped up regardless, but it was pretty fun seeing it in there, I am sure the guys were excited.

On what Coach Meyer said after the game…

He said enjoy the win, but it is going to be something we are going to work from. It is always good to be 1-0, but I have been around here long enough to know that we have to get better. It is easy to be complacent that we got a "W", but we have to do better.

Vernell Brown

On how well he played and going against Wyoming's Jovon Boaknight…

"I just come out and help the defense and do what I am supposed to do. I am supposed to cover guys and that is what I try to do. I just felt real confident about our scheme. We kept everything in front of us so we couldn't really make mistakes.

"I just come out and try to make plays. I let the game come to me, and I don't gamble a lot. It felt good to start, I got the first game jitters out of the way and now we can get ready for next week.

"Like I said in the pre-season I came out to earn some respect. So, I come out ready to work and tonight was just the next day at work.

"Of course he was their star player, I came out to try and stop him and I think I did a pretty good job." On the play he made the interception…

"I was in coverage and in a zone . In the zone the defensive back is supposed to see the ball in the zone. I saw the ball and broke on it. "

On what needs to improve on defense…

"We have to get the calls in and get everyone lined up right. We definitely have some things to work on, but we came out and got a victory. I think it was the first game jitters. We have a lot of new guys on defense and a couple on offense, so I guess it was jitters. We can work on our communication, get everybody lined up right and go play football."

On the confidence of the defense…

The confidence is definitely there. We have a great d-line, great linebackers and we are very aggressive. Our d-line and linebackers did a great job with pressure. We try and be an aggressive defense and that helps the secondary make plays.

On the fan participation at the "Gator Walk"…

"The "Gator Walk" was definitely an experience. This is my fifth year and I have never seen anything close to it. It was definitely a very great experience. I didn't realize there were going to be that many people there."

Chad Jackson

On why he had such a big role…

"As I said, as a receiver in this offense, you can score as a receiver or out of the backfield. There has to be love for the receivers, if you can make plays, you are going to get the ball. I was the go to guy tonight. I was getting open on my routes and seemed to be making plays. I guess he just kept coming back to me."

On the option pitch, touchdown he scored…

I had to fight for that touchdown. Coach is always saying "Score in the red zone." If I don't score he says he will just give the ball to the back and let him run it in. I didn't want that to happen so I had to get it in."

On Coach Meyer saying he has become a leader for the receivers…

"I am just out there helping the receivers, telling them their routes, working hard and trying to pick up the other receivers. In the spring, Coach didn't really like Dre that much because of this and that, but Dre has picked it up and Coach is in love with Dre right now, so they have to work hard just to get better.

On knowing the history at his position…

"All the past receivers here I looked up to. Any receiver here in the past that did good and has a legacy here, I look up to them."

On the running backs and the talent at that position…

"We have Skyler and Kestahn, they stepped up tonight. I like to ru the ball, but I am not Ciatrick, Ciatrick ran great."

On whether they proved anything to Coach Meyer…

"We paid him back a lot. We paid him back over the summer by staying out of trouble. We got the locker room back and all of our clothes back, showing him we can be trusted."

Ray McDonald

On Coach Meyer…

"Coach Meyer is a great coach,. He has a good attitude towards us and towards the team. He is just a great guy."

On pressuring the quarterback…

"I don't want to say he was scared. I just felt like we got to him a few times and got him out of the pocket. He may have been a little rattled in front of the swamp and 90,000 fans."

On the play of the secondary…

"Our cornerbacks can cover good. Of course, he wouldn't have had a touchdown if our defensive line would have had a sack (n that play). Our defensive backs did a great job in coverage."

On his play during the game…

"It was not my best game, it was pretty good as a defensive end, but I need to come out and eliminate my mistakes."

Brandon Siler

On the overall play of the defense…

"The defense really got after it. The front four, I really can't say enough about thse guys, they really got after it. Marcus, Ray, Steve. and Jeremy, they made it easy on me. I think our defense was by itself."

Specifically on the play of the cornerbacks…

"Dee had good coverage out there. He dropped a couple, but is a good cornerback and in position to make the play. VB is going to show everybody. I love VB, I think he is really going to be a player. Everyone wants to point at his size, but he is going to show them. He showed how he can play tonight."

On what needs to improve…

"We have to make some corrections. We have to get our calls in. It is going to be loud out there. There are a lot of calls we missed and a lot of assignments, but we played hard and got after it. The biggest problems were missed assignments and not communicating "well.

On fan participation…

"We love the fan noise. I was pumping them up a much as I can on the sideline. They aren't hurting us, we love that as hard as it is for us, just imagine how hard it is for the offense to try and get calls and checks and that kind of stuff."

On Chad Jackson…

"Chad for heisman. I have been saying that since two a days. I love Chad and I think he is an amazing player. He does some things that I have never seen anyone else do. That is how highly I think of Chad. Yes he can duplicate four touchdowns, I think he will do that a couple of times this year."

On the "Gator Walk"

"It was amazing. We showed our appreciation to the fans after the game. The fans seeing us walking to the stadium, I have never experienced anything like that."

Tate Casey

On Chad Jackson and the capabilities of the wide receivers…

"He came out to play. Chad made a few big plays last year, and he just came out and did what we needed him to do. Never say never, we still have a game next week and in this offense anything can happen. He could come out next week with 150 yards and five touchdowns for all we know. Chad is a gamer. It says a lot for guys like Bubba and Dallas to play like they di and for him to come out with a game like that. It could be Bubba, Jemalle, Dallas, or any of us next week. We have a lot of talent."

On the running game…

"The running game is vital in this offense, it is a perimeter game. Anyone that watched the game can tell if we would have been open up top, they would have busted out. I think that is one thing that Coach Meyer is going to get corrected this week. The perimeter run game is a lot of accountability on the wide receivers. Making blocks out wide is a big deal. We circle the field on stretch plays, zone plays, pitch plays. I am not saying the receivers are at fault, it has to be on everybody.

There were a couple of blocking schemes that didn't work, some small details we need to work on. We were a couple of plays short of busting out a big game. We need to finish block. There are no talent issues. It is pretty much execution, the system is infallible, we just need to execute."

On his role in the offense…

"I know my role, whatever I can do for the team. If it is catching the ball then I will. With my role there is a lot of blocking too, there is a lot of blocking responsibilities that the wide receivers don't have. I have to go with that to. However many balls I get, I will get. I am not going to complain ior whine about it.

On the variety of the offense…

"We have so many guys in this offense that can rush the ball and do some damage. As far as blocking goes, you just have to do your assignment. The shovel is a big part of our running game, it is only one man away from being a pitch. The running game is there, it's all in the execution."

On the change of Deshawn Wynn…

"There is a big difference. We have seen a lot of change in him since Coach Meyer showed up, and he has worked hard. I am anxious to see how he shows up (this game).

On the "Gator Walk"…

"Unreal. The Gator Walk was something else. I didn't think it was going to be that big, but it was fun to be a part of."
