VETTEL: Larry Vettel's Weekly Picks

Week two of the picks column and I'm off to a reasonably good start with a record of 8-4 after week one. I lost with Bowling Green unable to stay with Wisconsin for four quarters, Hawaii failing to stay within 36-½ points of Southern Cal and both Florida and Miami failing to get in the end zone from the two yard line in the closing minute.

This week's schedule is somewhat disappointing in that it has a couple of great games in Ohio State/Texas and Notre Dame/Michigan, but a lot of so-so contests as well. But as they say on Broadway, the show must go on.

Texas (plus 1-½) over Ohio State: Oh to be on the horseshoe for this one on Saturday! I think this game might showcase as much talent as any in the country this season. Picking the Longhorns in recent years has burned many a college football analyst. Hopefully I won't be the next one. (Texas 24-20)

Michigan (minus 7-½) over Notre Dame: Charlie Weis had an impressive debut on the N.D. sidelines, but Michigan has far more talent than Pittsburgh. (Michigan 28-17)

Florida (minus 29-½) over La. Tech: The Bulldogs were crushed by the top teams on their schedule last year and they lost their best player in dynamite tailback Ryan Moats. (Florida 49-7)

Arizona State (no line) over LSU: The Bayou Bengals were a touchdown favorite before Hurricane Katrina moved this game to Tempe. As I write this, there is no spread. Either way, this is a very tough opener for new coach Les Miles. (Upset #1: ASU 24-23)

South Carolina (plus 17-½) over Georgia: Georgia is a lot better, but the Gamecocks always play the Bulldogs tough, and their new head coach has had some success against the red and black. Enough to make it interesting, anyway. (Georgia 30-17)

Auburn (minus 15-½) over Mississippi State: I like what Sylvester Croom is trying to do in Starkville, but he doesn't have the players to deal with a very angry group of Tigers. (Auburn 34-13)

Vanderbilt (plus 11-½) over Arkansas: Razorbacks will have to figure out how to play without Matt   Jones. That might take some time. When was Vandy last 2-0? (Upset #2: Vanderbilt 21-20)

Alabama (minus 12-½) over Southern Miss: Alabama is loaded on defense and is hoping to find more offense with a healthy Brodie Croyle. Here's guessing they make progress. (Bama 27-7)

Clemson (plus 1-½) over Maryland: Huge opening win has them talking ACC Title up Clemson way. Can Tommy Bowden stand prosperity? We shall see. (Clemson 20-16)

North Carolina (plus 12-½) over Georgia Tech: This is the "Carolina" Steve Spurrier would be coaching at had the Tar Heels not shocked Miami. UNC has a lot of talent on offense and I'm guessing the Ramblin Wreck is still celebrating the Auburn win. (Georgia Tech 34-24)

Illinoize (minus 15-½) over San Jose State: Zooker's kids gave him a comeback win last week but shouldn't need such heroics against the Spartans. It may also be his last win for awhile. (Illinoize 30-10)

California (minus 8-½) over Washington: Tyrone Willingham gets a step closer to a .500 career record. To be fair, he inherited a mess up there. Jeff Tedford is one of the best coaches anywhere. (Cal 27-14)

Last Week: 8-4

Year to Date: 8-4
