"Michigan coaches told me I'd play a nickel position in their secondary as a freshman, so I could compete right away," said Pennsylvania secondary ace Darrin Walls. "They said they would love to have me as a DB. I like that coach (Ron) English has a great reputation for putting defensive backs into the NFL..."
Pennsylvania cornerback Darrin Walls (6-1, 180, 4.4) visited Michigan for the Notre Dame game with his father and step-mother. "We stayed at the Campus Inn. Steve Breaston (wide receiver) was my host. I didn't get there until about 4:30 am on Saturday because we had a game on Friday night. After the game on Saturday, I had dinner at a seafood place with Steve and Ryan Mundy (safety)," Walls said.
"We all went to a café on campus after that. Steve was down a little but because of the loss, but we didn't talk about football too much. We just talked about life.
"I really liked the way the coaches feel about me and the college atmosphere on campus. My visit to Michigan was better than my trip to Pittsburg (9/3). That's because it was a new experience for me, but also because Ann Arbor is a real college town and full of college football fans," he said.
"Michigan coaches told me I'd play a nickel position in their secondary as a freshman, so I could compete right away. They said they would love to have me as a DB. I like that coach (Ron) English has a great reputation for putting defensive backs into the NFL. We never talked about me committing. I also like that they have a good business school.
"All my favorites are close in my mind, but I'd say that Notre Dame and Michigan would be my top two over Pittsburgh, Florida, West Virginia and Penn State." All have offered.
"I like the new coaching staff at Notre Dame, on both offense and defense," said Walls, from Woodland Hills High School in Pittsburgh. "They graduate something like 99% of their players. I'll be going there on October 15 for my official trip. I've already been there for their spring game and went there for a seven-on-seven passing camp too.
"The depth at cornerback for Notre Dame is not too stacked, so that would be good for me. Michigan has more returning players and they are more experienced. But both teams could use CBs.
"I'm going to visit Florida this weekend (9/17). Urban Meyer and his staff will do a good job there," he said. "I've always dreamed of playing for Florida and they will have a successful year coached by Meyer. I've never been there before and I look forward to it.
"I might not take a fifth visit, but if I do, it will be to West Virginia or Penn State. I'd like to decide at the end of October or early November, if I could. All my favorites have called me this month, along with schools like Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland and Georgia Tech.
"Our team's record is 3-0. I've had one interception and I don't know how many tackles. Teams aren't throwing my way too much. I'm playing corner on both sides. On offense, I have 13 carries for 130 yards and three TDs."
