VETTEL: Larry Likes Gators, Vandy, BC

I'll be honest with you, when I agreed to do a picks column each week I didn't figure on picking with both Vanderbilt and Illinoize the first two weeks. But I did, and it paid off both times. Now I have to decide if I am to stick with the trend or move on since each team is on this week's list of games. Or maybe one of each just in case.

A 9-3 record with the spread will make you plenty of money at Vegas … if you have the guts to bet on your views, that is. Two of last week's losers were close games spread-wise. Arizona State almost ruined Les Miles' debut with LSU but couldn't hold on against the Tigers. Alabama spotted Southern Miss an eleven-point lead before scoring 20 unanswered, but it wasn't enough to cover the 12-½ points. The other loser was not close, but as a lifelong Notre Dame fan it was worth it to see the Fighting Irish beat Michigan, 17-10.

Now on to this week's picks, with some very significant games on the list.

* * *

Florida (minus 6-½) over Tennessee: That's a lot of points to give a very good team, but Florida just seems to me to be up to the task. Chris Leak ability to run the option won't be the key, his 300-plus passing will be. Florida 24-16

Boston College (plus 1-½) over Florida State: The Eagles have a ton of talent and the home field. FSU scored 13 in the first half against The Citadel. It should be interesting right up to the game deciding field goal. B.C. 17-16

Ole Miss (plus 3-½) over Vanderbilt: The Commodores have a great chance to be 3-0 for the first time since 1984. I think they'll do it, but I'm not laying points. Vandy 24-21

California (minus 21-½) over Illinois: Zooker has to deal with the biggest personnel mismatch of his career. Cal 47-17

Michigan State (plus 6-½ ) over Notre Dame: Charlie Weis is off to a great start, but he does not have great material. Michigan State 21-20

Wyoming (plus 2-½) over Air Force: The Falcons beat Washington opening day, but the Cowboys showed me they are pretty darn good. Wyoming 34-24

Alabama (minus 2-½) over South Carolina: Gamecocks face very physical 'Bama "D" with something to prove after sloppy start opening day. Not a good match for the HBC. Bama 20-10

UCLA (minus 6-½) over Oklahoma: You can tell things aren't good in Norman when Adrian Peterson is suspended… for PRACTICE. Sooners better find a QB in a hurry. UCLA 23-14

Arkansas (plus 31-½) over Southern Cal: This didn't work against Hawaii, but I'm guessing the Hogs defense has a little more pride than the Rainbows. Southern Cal 42-17

Arizona (plus 8-½) over Purdue: I like what Mike Stoops is trying to do out there, and Purdue is getting too much love. Purdue 27-22

Miami (minus 7-½) over Clemson: Tigers are off to a great start while 'Canes are an angry bunch. This would be bigger than last year's win in the Orange Bowl for Tommy Bowden, but I don't see it. Miami 28-17

Central Florida (plus 8-½) over South Florida: It's about time these knuckleheads got together. Knights had a good second half against South Carolina. Good enough to convince me they'll hang in there. USF 20-16
