POSTGAME: UF vs. UK Player and Coach Quotes

Coach Meyer: "This is a great day for Florida football. Anytime you can get a Division I-A football win, it's a good thing, outside of the obvious. I think our fears were exposed, that being that this team has very little depth. Kentucky came out smokin' in the second half and I thought it was over."

Florida Head Coach Urban Meyer

"Chris Leak played terrific. I think this was the best he's thrown the ball. I know at one point he was 21-for-26 with a big chunk of yards. I'm very happy with the way he's taken care of the ball."

"I thought we struggled at first on some missed assignments, then we're down 7-0. But we went out and scored seven straight touchdowns. Chris (Leak) ran the offense really well. As for the first half, in case you wonder, that's the way we like to have things look."

On having to put the starters back in the game…
"I was absolutely disgusted. You shouldn't have to do that at Florida. I was disgusted."

On Leak's status as starting quarterback…
"Chris was 25-of-32 for 319 yards and four touchdowns and he's never thrown one to the opponent. If he does that every week, we'll be okay. Chris Leak is our quarterback. Case closed."

On having a bad second half against Kentucky
"They are still an SEC team and they came back like that on Louisville. There's some fight (in Kentucky). I know their coach (Rich Brooks) very well and I'm proud of him."

Florida Players

#6 Jemalle Cornelius, WR
On his performance today…
"It feels good to contribute to the team. You have to be ready when your number is called. Coach (Meyer) always talks to use about stepping up and being ready. I came into today focused and ready to contribute anyway I could. I knew I was going to get some opportunities and made the best of them."

On the pressure of playing…
"I don't feel real pressure from the coaches to perform. It is more motivation. They want you to succeed and provide the team with plenty of motivation."

On Florida's offensive performance…
"We knew we were capable of putting together an offensive performance like this one today. It was all a matter of just clicking. Chris (Leak) played as well as he had all season. That was still only a little taste of what we are capable of. There is still a lot of stuff we can improve on."

#40 Brandon Siler, LB
On what is expected of the Florida defense…
"We expect a lot out of our defense. We challenge each other in practice and have a good offense to go up against. There is an attitude on the defense now that we know we are supposed to be good and we play like it. We have a realistic attitude that we are supposed to be an outstanding defense."

On stopping Kentucky late in the fourth quarter…
"They did some good things offensively in the second half but we stepped it up when we needed to. Our defense was upset after giving up a couple of touchdowns, so we made a point to go out and keep them out of the endzone.

On winning on the road…
"Anytime you can get a win on the road in the SEC, it is a good thing. We are 4-0 and playing pretty good but there is a long way to go and some tough games coming up."

Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks

"Our second quarter's kind of been killing us all year long. I think it was 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, we turn it over three times and give up 35 points. That's about as bad as it gets. If you look at the second quarter against Louisville, Idaho State and Indiana, the second quarter is where we're struggling. I do thank the fans that stayed for the second half. They got to see a little of what this team can do. At least (the team) came out and competed and finished the game. (The fans) also got to see a little bit of some very young players who I think are going to be very good. Curtis Pulley obviously did some good things. We couldn't go to our nine defense because we had too many defensive backs hurt, but we just can't turn the football over against a good team. We've got to make good plays on defense on third down. Our third down defense was very poor and our pass rush was again not good enough. Obviously, Florida's a very good football team."

On Andre Woodson
"He was trying to go and I just decided I wasn't going to put him at risk any further. He wouldn't really tell us. He just kept telling me he could go and I knew he was hurt just the way he was reacting after those plays. I just decided that I wasn't going to listen to him anymore. I just wanted to get him out and get him checked so if he is hurt, I didn't want him hurt any worse. We've got South Carolina coming up after a bye and we need all the healthy bodies we can get."

On the second half comeback…
"It's good to me that our players didn't give up. They competed and did come back. I'd rather be building on something else, but at least it showed that they have a little backbone and a little character and weren't going to give in to what was a pretty ugly situation going in at halftime."

"Obviously, they were going to attack us on defense. They have some outstanding athletes and some big size with their defensive front linebackers. And when you know Tennessee didn't get open on one-on-one coverage then they thought they could come in and play us tight man-to-man and it was fairly effective early. They got some hits on Andre Woodson. He threw his first interceptions of the year. He's a young quarterback and he's going to look at that and learn from it. All that pressure coming at him, but he might have been able to get rid of one or two. Other than one or two of the passes he handled, I thought he did pretty good because we weren't giving him a lot of help at the time."

Kentucky Players

#7 David Jones, CB
On his performance against Florida…
"I think I played well. This is the first really big game I've been in. I think I fed off the speed of the game last week and did it again this week."

On playing special teams…
"I don't think it's much different from playing on defense. Every opportunity you get, you have to take advantage of. That's what I try to do when I'm out there."

On what the locker room was like at halftime...
"It was quiet. We went over everything we needed to do right. We knew we had to come out with a spark."

#3 Andre Woodson, QB
On injuring his ribs in the first half…
"I took the blow in the first half and it was affecting my passes. It was really straining my body to make the passes and get the ball out there."

On Curtis Pulley's performance…
"He definitely did a great job stepping it up in the fourth quarter. I felt like he did a great job moving the ball and putting points on the board. He really stepped up tonight."

On having next Saturday off…
"I think it's going to help us. We definitely need this time to get ready for the next game. It's better to be 1-1 in the SEC than 0-2. We have to brush this game off and be ready for the next one."

#15 Curtis Pulley, QB
On his last touchdown run…
"I could see green in the endzone, and I wanted to score. I just started running full-speed ahead and I wasn't going to stop until I scored."

On the second half…
"Overall we played much better in the second half. We knew we were down, but the fans still supported us. We had to keep playing hard for our self-confidence and pride."

On adjusting to the college level of play…
"In high school, I rolled out of the pocket a lot to throw a pass. Now the coaches want me to stay forward longer to read the defense."

#18 Jacob Tamme, TE
On his blocked punt…
"We planned all week to look out for any abnormal punt formations from Florida, so we knew we could take advantage of that situation. It was at the beginning of the game, and it got the crowd fired up to give us momentum. The ball seemed like it was in the air for so long, and I couldn't believe no one had hit me by the time the ball came down."

On the second quarter…
"The second quarter killed us. They (Florida) outscored us 35-0 in the quarter. As a team we have got to learn what to do when we get in trouble like that. We played pretty good in the second half, as well as the first quarter."

On the team's confidence…
"This is the best Florida team I have seen since I've been here. They are extremely athletic and very well coached. They played hard, and for us to go man-to-man with them except for the second quarter is not too bad."
