The sweep was Florida's second league sweep of the year. The Gators swept Ole Miss earlier in the year. Florida also won its 30th game on the year. It marks the 12th consecutive year that UF has won 30+ games. Florida has also won eight straight games against Vanderbilt and 14 of the last 15 matchups between the two schools.
After Florida starter Keith Ramsey pitched the first 5.2 innings, Florida's bullpen went to work. Freshman Connor Falkenbach (2.0 IP) and junior Jamie Goldfarb (1.1 IP) shut down Vanderbilt over the final 3.1 innings to secure the win. Ramsey (5-2) earned the win after striking out a career-high tying six batters over 5.2 innings and Goldfarb picked up his second save of the year.
"This weekend, our young pitchers- David Bartelt, Tommy Boss, Connor Falkenbach and Jamie Goldfarb really came through for us," Florida head coach Pat McMahon said. "The three freshmen did a great job of relief and Jamie Goldfarb just continues to get better and better with each outing. They're getting the sense of what it takes to be successful in this league."
Florida went up 6-3 with two runs in the seventh inning. Jonathan Tucker led off with a single followed by Brian Rose's walk. Both runners advanced on Matt Goss' sacrifice bunt. A walk to Aaron Davidson loaded the bases for Mark Kiger who drove in Tucker from third on a ground out. On Kiger's ground ball, Davidson got in a run down between first and second base which allowed Brian Rose to score from third base for UF's second run of the inning and commanding 6-3 lead.
The Gators added an insurance run in the eighth when Jake Riordan walked, stole second and scored on Jonathan Tucker's RBI double down the left field line. Jamie Goldfarb retired the Commodores in the ninth inning to pick up his second save.
Florida went up 1-0 in the first when Mark Kiger belted a triple to right field and scored on Mario Garza's double to left field. The Gators went up 4-0 on three more runs in the second inning. Matt Goss' two run home run in the second inning. Goss drilled the first pitch over the fence and off a palm tree in right field after Jonathan Tucker reached on an error. Aaron Davidson followed with a double and Mark Kiger drove Davidson in on a single to center field to give the Gators their 4-0 lead.
Vanderbilt answered in the third inning when John Kaye led off with a home run to right field, his third of the three-game series. Chris Broadus followed with a single, Jonathan Douillard walked and Karl Nonemaker's sacrifice bunt moved both runners to second and third base. Vanderbilt pulled to within 4-3 on Sean Luellwitz's two RBI single to right field which scored both runners.
Vanderbilt starter Jeff Little (4-5) took the loss after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing 11 hits and five runs (two earned).
Florida stranded 13 runners on the day. Jonathan Tucker finished with a career-high four hits in a 4-5, RBI, two run day. Mark Kiger went 3-4 with a triple and two RBI, Aaron Davidson contributed 2-3 hitting and two walks and Matt Goss got Florida started with his fifth home run of the year.
Florida is next in action next weekend as it hosts Georgia for a three-game SEC series. Game times are 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
