Deng Visits Duke Unofficially

Luol Deng, one of the premier forwards in the Class of 2003, visited Duke unofficially last weekend. While his list rests at seven schools, don't look for a decision anytime soon.

Last weekend, Blair Academy forward Luol Deng made a trip down south to see the campus of Duke University and get a glimpse of Duke basketball during the team's banquet. The trip was an unofficial one as the forward isn't even close to making a decision.

"It wasn't official, it was unofficial," Blair coach Joe Mantegna said. "He went down for their banquet."

Mantegna said that Deng has himself a school list but unlike a lot of juniors, there won't be any rush to decide. "I think (Deng and teammate Charlie Villanueva) are going to start getting some pressure but Luol isn't going to decide until the fall. He's narrowed the list down to some great academic schools and now it's a basketball decision."

The list reads Duke, Wake Forest, Virginia, Texas, Florida, Missouri and George Washington. Mantegna didn't know how the Duke visit went because at the time we spoke, he hadn't seen or talked to Luol yet.

George Washington will come speak with Deng on Wednesday. This summer, he'll go to Nike and will travel with the NJ Demons. It's likely they play in the Super Showcase in Orlando, but it's anyone's guess where else they play. Mantegna says they have been invited everywhere.

In August, Deng will be playing for England in the European Junior Nationals. The last time he traveled abroad, there were some issues with his return. Mantegna says that won't happen again as they have everything worked out in advance.

"He's a bright kid and he deserves academically to go to a great school."
