James is the half-brother of cornerback Jacques Rickerson, the marquee player for St. Augustine's undefeated Yellow Jackets. Rickerson is a four-star defender (rated by Scout.com) who has continually listed the Gators as his favorite in the recruiting process.
James got the call he had been waiting for Wednesday and it immediately moved the Gators to the top of his favorite's list.
"I talked to Coach (Urban) Meyer yesterday and he said he was offering me a scholarship," James said when he was contacted Thrsday night. "That automatically knocks my top three down to Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech. Florida is in the leader right now."
James may not be a big guy but he's electric in the kick return game and he's certainly unafraid of competition. He is confident that can make the transition from high school to the college game and not just on special teams.
"I think I would fit in with the program," he said. "I like the offense … (Coach Meyer) told me and my coach that I can play on all the special teams and that I could play against all of the top teams in the nation."
James plans on being in the stands at the Florida-Florida State game for an unofficial trip. He wants to take his official visits early however.
"I am going to be at the game for an unofficial, but I will probably take my visit some other time," he said. "I want to make it December but if I have to it will be in January. I still have to set up my visits with South Carolina and Georgia Tech."
Brandon James is considered one of the most dangerous punt and kickoff returners in the state of Florida. He is a Devin Hester-type player in that he is a threat to go all the way any time he gets the ball and there is the slightest crack.
