RECRUITING: Damon McDaniel piles up numbers

Damon McDaniel has put up some impressive numbers for (Virginia Beach) Landstown High School (10-0) as the Eagles ran roughshod through the regular season beating opponents into submission by 40 point margins. The trend of impressive numbers continued in Landstown's first playoff game last weekend.

The top ranked team in Virginia 3A football (14th in USA Today) opened playoff action against Kellam (8-2), whom they destroyed 68-26 on the road back in September. They won yet again last Friday to the tune of 34-14 behind Damon's masterful receiving.

In the playoff victory against Kellam, Damon stepped up to the plate with an injured Percy Harvin out of the game, accumulating a mind-boggling 213 yards on just 9 receptions, including one that went for a 75 yard touchdown. So far on the season, McDaniel has hauled in 79 receptions for 1,513 yards and over twenty touchdowns in Landstown's spread offense.

Prior to the playoff against Kellam, McDaniel said, "We blew Kellam out the first time, but we'll see what happens this time. We had a tough game or two along the way." Not this time around! Their only close call on the season was a 35-21 regular season ending victory over Bayside.

Seemingly, the only struggle for McDaniel occurs along the recruiting trail as he continues to look forward to what is expected to be a very bright future.

"The schools that I'm looking at are Miami, LSU, Florida, and Virginia Tech. I'm scheduled to visit LSU on the (November) 24th, but we have a game so I'll probably have to reschedule. I haven't set up a trip to Miami yet, maybe in December? I can't rule either one of those schools out yet, because I haven't been there. Nobody leads at this point."

He expects to make an announcement on signing day, possibly on a national sports network.

Florida-"I had a great time down there. I really liked it. They were like a family. Everybody was very nice and hospitable to one another. It would be a good fit for me. Offensively, they run the same type of offense that we run (at Landstown). I know they have had some problems, but Chris Leak is only in his first year in this offense. He'll be better in his second year."

Virginia Tech- "They showed a lot of love to me. A lot of people kept coming up to me and saying- You've got to go to Virginia Tech and stuff like that. They were real open. You know that we make the walk with the team to the stadium. They had even had people standing with posters for us. I remember one said- Damon McDaniel come to Virginia Tech and bring Percy (Harvin) with you. I had three hosts on that trip. Rolle, Marcus Vick for a little while, and a receiver, but I can't remember his name right now."
